Was it the "Rip Off Britain: Food" programme?
I find with some orange juice it goes "fizzy" if its too long past its use by date but thats unpasteurised, so I guess it doesnt last as long.
I've had eggs (used as a coating for schnitzel) that were over 2 months past the use by date (I think?) and they were absolutely fine. I never pay attention to the "Consume within 5 days" on things like chorizo/salami either - its cured meat FFS.
