After David Gest's death earlier today, it got me thinking that there have been a number of high profile celebrity deaths already this year and we're not even 4 months through the year!

Could 2016 be the year of celebrity deaths, much like 2009 was?

We've lost David Bowie, Terry Wogan, Paul Daniels, Ronnie Corbett and David Gest so far, who could be next?

My main feelings on who else could die this year are Bruce Forsyth and Elton John.

What do others think?

I'm not going to join in the predictions, however OP you have missed many off your list, 2016 has been truly terrible for celebrity deaths...

Denise Robertson as lewismacf notes
Alan Rickman
Merle Haggard
Glenn Frey (The Eagles)
Maurice White (Earth, Wind & Fire)
Harper Lee
Garry Shandling
George Martin
Howard Marks

I'm sure there are a few I'm forgetting too. A truly sad year and many icons lost. RIP to all, and thoughts to all their loved ones

Just been looking through the names on Last Word for first three months of 2015. A couple of people from the arts most weeks and at least one big name most weeks. Perhaps been slightly more pop singers this year but not significantly so.

Completely forgot Alan Rickman, the others aren't really recognisable to me. It really has been a terrible year so far then.

Although it was in 2015, you could arguably add Cilla Black to the list too, having still been within the last year. I know this website held a 'particular' view of her, but you can't deny her iconic status. Within a few months, there have been so many people who have had such an influence on today's culture.

Most of them are genuinely famous for their talents and none of them was young, Harper Lee was in her 90's FFS!

David Gest was famous for being famous. A mainstay on the zeleb dregs circuit.

The vast majority of them are men. Such a horrible year so far. RIP to them all.

Bruce Forsyth wouldn't surprise me. Elton seems to be in good health though

Some strange definitions of what constitutes a celebrity on this thread. David Gest is a minor celebrity, famous for nothing and are we really counting Howard Marks and Denise Robertson?

Just remembered Johan Cruyff too, one of the best footballers ever to grace the game.

It's subjective, surely?

In my opinion, being married to one of the most famous women in Hollywood and appearing on many reality shows (Gest), having a best-selling book and successful film about your life, plus high profile political campaigning (Marks) and being on a popular daytime TV show every week since the late 80s to dish out advice (Robertson) are all fair markers of fame or at least being in the awareness of the general public.

Nobody is saying they're as famous as Bowie or similar, just that they had at least some degree of fame and they died this year. You've clearly heard of them to pass comment on them so my point is proven, really.

Add to that list:
Terry Wogan
David Bowie
Ronnie Corbett

I'm sure there were some members of rock bands who died too, but I don't remember their names. 2016 is such an awful year so far Was 2009 really a bad year for celebrity deaths as well? All I remember from that year is Stephen Gately, Farah Fawcett and Michael Jackson.

Frank Kelly aswell, and dying exactly 18 years to the day Dermot Morgan did, was quite freaky.

Agree, Bowie was no celebrity. He was a world famous A grade SUPERSTAR!

It may be fine to discuss who has already passed, but not to speculate on who might be next, which is poor taste.

I already mentioned those in my original post.

In 2009 we lost Jade Goody too, plus a couple of other notable ones that I can't remember right now.

You want to really see how many famous names we've lost, just look on Wikipedia. It's a lot more than you'd ever realize.
