Agree, Bowie was no celebrity. He was a world famous A grade SUPERSTAR!

It may be fine to discuss who has already passed, but not to speculate on who might be next, which is poor taste.
A matter of opinion, just a pop singer as far as I (and probably many others) are concerned.

I agree too, though my Dad never got the hype.

I thought that he was wonderful and I was (still am) absolutely gutted that he's gone.

David Gest has managed to die twice!

I feel bad for saying this but this comment made me laugh so much. I do, of course, feel sad for his loved ones but it was the memory of the hysteria in the CBB house that made me chuckle.

His fans seem worse than those of other pop singers like Bieber!

No.

This will be normal from here on in. It coninsides with the advent of TV in the 50s thus creating many more delebs.

Although it was in 2015, you could arguably add Cilla Black to the list too, having still been within the last year. I know this website held a 'particular' view of her, but you can't deny her iconic status. Within a few months, there have been so many people who have had such an influence on today's culture.
If we're including the back-end of 2015 you could count Rock icon Lemmy who died on the 28th December 2015.

But of course we also lost Victoria Wood yesterday.

Radio 4's "More or Less" covered this recently
Celebrity deaths

They decided to use whether someone got an obituary on the BBC to gauge if they were 'famous'.
And the conclusion was - yes, there have been a lot more celeb deaths this year.
As TheDC notes this is due to the expansion of telly in the '50s and '60s and the advent of rock 'n roll. Before this the only real 'celebs' were movie stars and royalty.

What is probably unusual is a big proportion of the deaths have been "before their time".

Doris Roberts of "Everybody Loves Raymond" died a couple of days ago - but she was 90, so really no surprise there.

Victoria Wood at 62 was a huge shock.

However several of the UK big names, Wogan, Rickman, Bowie, Wood had been suffering from cancer but had chosen not to publicise their condition.

This obviously wrong-footed the media somewhat - as glaringly obvious yesterday with no Victoria Wood show put into the schedules as a tribute.
7.30pm tonight on BBC2 is the Tribute show

I have said elsewhere on this forum that this year the BBC's We Remember Them will have to be an hour long if 2016 continues in this way.

Exactly. I don't listen to his music myself but he was very influential on the music scene and will go down as one of the 'greats' of music. He's left behind a legacy.

Somebody must be planning the launch of an obituary channel.

I don't know what The DC is, but I was thinking of this last night.
That in previous years the celebrities who had died probably made their name as celebrities a lot earlier when there probably weren't as many celebrities around in media culture as there are today. And that when many of us were kids in the 70s and 80s there were probably much more celebrities around due to the expansion of television and media culture. PLUS they would be added to the list celebrities who would have been around in the decades prior to the 60s.

So imagine what it might be like in 10 years from now. Very well known celebrities may be dying and reported about on a daily basis as opposed to what is roughly a weekly basis right now.

It's official, fame has now replaced heart disease as the No 1 cause of death.

I'm starting to click on DS and other news formats with morbid dread, at the moment. I am concerned about another young-ish well known and loved female who's not been in good shape but won't name her as it's tempting fate and very much hope I'm wrong. Seriously .

Too many shocking deaths this year, and we are only 4 months in!
Please make it stop?
