Shocking number of celebrity deaths - many before their time.
Just reeling from Victoria Wood's untimely demise and now we have Prince - from what was at first described as a cold!!! |

That's it this is almost supernatural, this year is freaking me out. I am thinking it could be Bruce Forsythe next, or Joan Collins....or Angela Lansbury??

To be fair, there is definitely an element of the golden generation of showbiz starting to reach a certain age. Several of this year's big losses such as Terry Wogan and Ronnie Corbett are explained by this phenomenon.
It's also worth pointing out that partly for this reason, 2015 was also fairly bad year where we lost several huge names - Christopher Lee, Cilla Black, Leonard Nimoy for starters. But the thing that stands out about this year is that most of the really big losses shouldnt have happened just yet - Prince was only 57 and Bowie, Alan Rickman and Victoria Wood were in their 60s, hardly an age to die these days. They are entirely unexpected and I think what is really shocking this year is just how unexpected these deaths are rather than the volume of them. |

Yep, another true big loss with Prince today. This is getting ridiculous. Gotta be Brucie next surely?

Just to cheer things up Doris Day was 94 the other week and Kirk Douglas will be 100 in December. Other than the Queen Mother how many celebs have made it to 100?

Ken Dodd, Rolf Harris, Bruce Forsyth and Prince Philip. If at least one of them's not snuffed it by year's end, I'll be amazed.

Percy Sledge died in April 2015 - but for some reason, news of his death (a year ago) has been been sweeping across Facebook, yesterday and today, and people keep sharing the news like it's just happened

Got overshadowed a bit by Victoria Wood, but David Swift ('Drop the Dead Donkey', and brother of 'Keeping Up Appearances'' Clive) has also gone: http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2016/0...davenport_dies

For as long as i can remember, deaths of people in the public eye have happened pretty regularly. Even when I was young several decades ago, if you listened to the Radio 4 news it would not be at all unusual to hear that some musician, artist, etc had died. The difference is that as a young person I had never heard of most of them, and you might combine that with it being a different sort of society where most people didn't react to the death of someone such as a famous concert pianist they might have known of but never actually met in the same way as they would to the passing of a relative or close friend.
Most of us who think there are a lot of famous people dying are now probably of an age where we have known of these people for several decades and they - like us - have just got to the point where some people do die. Most of us in our 50s or upwards are probably aware of school friends who have died in the past few years, so to say that someone aged 57 or 62 has died 'too young' and it's a huge shock- well, yes of-course that's right, but sadly it has always been the case that some do. I don't think it is in any way logical to 'blame' 2016 as if this is some sort of curse based around the year. It is likely to go on long after this year is itself gone. |

I don't think it is in any way logical to 'blame' 2016 as if this is some sort of curse based around the year. It is likely to go on long after this year is itself gone. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36108133 They reference much of what has been cited on this thread as reasoning, namely the boom in TV and music creating more celebrities, along with the advent of social media making people more famous (and no doubt also making people more aware of celebrity deaths). They also predict it's going to carry on. Quite sad really, it's never nice to hear of someone beloved or popular dying and I think for people who grew up in the 60s/70s/80s and even 90s the people who have passed recently are very much icons and heroes to many of us, which makes it even sadder. |
