Shame that there doesn't seem to be much in the way of appreciation for Kobe Bryant and his career, he really should be up for the lifetime achievement award.

Basketball is a sport with practically zero following in the UK though, it would be like giving the award to a handball or water polo player.

I'm slightly surprised Basketball has never caught on, most leisure centres have a court and it doesn't require any special equipment yet for some reason people just aren't interested.

We used to play it at school, hated it with a passion...still do. Non contact team sport which made it so dull to play.

In a domestic league. Had very little impact outside of basketball in the USA. Granted, he was probably was in a couple of Olympic gold medal teams
Both have had terrific careers no doubt about that, however your put down or criticism towards Kobe, puts Davies into some perspective. |

Some people have put forward Steve Davies' name for this award, but is he really more famous outside of the UK then Kobe??

Hamilton shouldn't be anywhere near this award so with any luck it'll go to Mo Farah.

Not this year in terms of winning it but another F1 title will see him short listed.

It would be like giving Mo Farah rollerskates and then putting a "freeze" on rollerskate development for the other athletes. |

Phelps will probably get overseas and I wouldn't criticise that. But I don't think his achievements are any more special than Bolt's. Great swimmers often win at least 4 or 5 medals in an Olympics. It's far too testing for track events for that to happen. As Spitz and Phelps have showed, you get a truly exceptional swimmer every generation. Someone like Bolt comes along after several generations.
![]() Just to belatedly add to the Trott/Kenny question: I think she's more memorable as she looks quite sweet, even girly, yet clearly has nerves of steel - the contrast makes her stand out. And, more importantly, I think that voters tend to be particularly impressed with multi-eventers in general, plus they can get invested over a period of time, checking to see when the next race is, building up the tension in the knowledge that there are multiple ways in which things can go wrong. Maybe it's just me, but I just think all that leaves more of an impression in the mind. |

I've just had one of those ideas that seems brilliant in the middle of the night but will probably look very silly in the morning. But, hey, I'm used to looking daft on these boards, so I may as well go for it
![]() What about having an additional award for partnerships? I vaguely remember Torvill and Dean winning a team award and thinking it was a little odd as, while teamwork is clearly vital, the dynamic between two people is very different to that across a group. And it would help solve the problem of squeezing in all those notable Olympic achievers. You could have: LaugherMears - first ever diving gold Glover/Stanning - defending an Olympic title in an endurance event and winning multiple world champs really shouldn't go unacknowledged Clark/Mills - I know nothing about sailing but, erm, it widens the range of sports recognised? Then you could be justified in including Grainger despite the 'only' silver thing, on the grounds of longevity; there are also various other medalists you could look at for different reasons, plus Paralympians Outside of the Olympics, both Jamie Murray and Heather Watson hold Grand Slam titles (I'm choosing to ignore the fact that they had foreign partners ) and who knows what might come out of the Davis Cup? And there must be other sports which might throw out a couple of potential nominees.Just a thought... |

![]() I would have thought that this highlights the fact that partnerships are a bit of a grey area and it would be nice to get it straightened out. |

Since 2012 a panel decide the team award so we won't have any scenarios like above again I feel. Leicester are 1/10 now so virtually guaranteed it
Cannot find odds on overseas now so I reckon Bolt is such a big favourite |

Cannot find odds on overseas now so I reckon Bolt is such a big favourite I know I'm sounding like I'm on some sort of rabid one-woman mission to make partnerships a SPOTY category but I'm not that fussed really. In fact, in many years, I think it would be difficult to put together a worthy shortlist. It's just that this year there seems to be an embarrassment of riches in that area and many will not be recognised, which seems a shame. I agree Leicester are nailed on, which I have absolutely no problem with, I would just like to see a few more of the people I mentioned earlier get their little moment in the spotlight come awards night. I know they will be mentioned in round-ups but I imagine the Olympic one(s) will whizz by at a pretty dizzying pace

I didn't mean to suggest we'd get the same sort of anomaly again, just that I'm not the only person who has ever considered a team and a partnership to be two different types of entity.

True, though I think they'll get lost in the crowd. Just far too many outstanding Olympians this year, dammit - it's a hard life

The poster mentioned the Paralympians in an earlier post, above, and they have been consistently referenced throughout this thread.
They aren't being forgotten at all so there's no need for a specific post about it. |
