The fact that Sarah Storey is still 100/1 with Coral shows how far the Paralympiams are behind the Olympians in terms of audience recognition. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but it's a fact. I hope Dame Sarah, David Weir ( should he win his events ) and possibly Hannah Cockroft are on the shortlist but I'd be very surprised if any troubled the top 3

100/1, still shorter odds then what Leicester were to win the league, and look what happened there!
So you never know!

You give me £50 and I'll offer you 200/1

I'd love to see her on the podium but sadly I don't think she will.

Do it online anyway Appledash

if Dame Sarah wins a couple more golds ( and hasn't she 3 more medal hopes ? ) she could well come in in the betting but likewise if she doesn't she may drift too. Whatever she is an inspiration and an outstanding athlete

I asked you do you think if someone won multiple gold medals would that be good enough to be on the shortlist?

I also said it would be deserved if a Paralympian won, just as it would if an Olympian won, quite where you getting up in arms and comparing that to me taking about blacks or whatnot I don't know.

It is nothing to do with "tokenism" at all, it is you that seems to have a hang up about a Paralympian possibly winning this main award, is there nothing at all that someone coming from these games could do to be worthy enough in your mind??
I dont have a hang up at all. If a paralympian becomes well known enough to the masses and achieves something spectacular enough to merit it I would have no issue.

Someone doing something that is a complete minority sport that the majority of the population dont give a toss about other than when it is overexposed on tv every 4 years winning because they are disabled and people go "oh aren't they all marvellous?" in the most patronising possible way is a completely different thing.

I know what you are saying bud and I agree with you. And in no way have you dissed the abilities or talents of the Paralympians.

Still a long way to go in the Paralympics but I reckon Ellie Robinson has overtaken Amy Tinkler as the favourite for Young Sports Personality.

Certainly if she wins a second gold tonight by beating Ellie Simmonds

Currently my 12 person shortlist (it was 12 in 2012) would be

Mo Farah
Andy Murray
Chris Froome
Laura Trott
Jason Kenny
Max Whitlock
Nicola Adams
Jade Jones
Charlotte Dujardin
Alistair Brownlee
Gareth Bale
Lewis Hamilton (if he is F1 champion, otherwise Adam Peaty)

A-listers* and double gold medalists only.

(I realise that there are no Paralympians in my list but only about 1% of the population is eligible to enter. I can't see them at the same level)

* UK global sport A-listers - Murray, Farah, Hamilton, Froome, Bale (McIlroy has dropped out)

Hmm, not bad... But I'd take out Dujardin - I'd rather give it to Allegro, perhaps they can go in the team award. And certainly not Bale - you could make an argument that he wasn't even the best player for Wales at the Euros and anyone in a team sport really has to be head and shoulders above anyone else to qualify, IMO.

And Adam Peaty definitely has to be in. Only the one gold, true, but two massive world records in two days is amazing, not to mention the relay team being highly unlikely to have won silver without his efforts.

In reality, Sarah Storey is bound to be on the list but I don't think I'd pick her myself. I've never really understood how her particular disability affects her cycling; if there has to be a 'triumph over adversity' slot, I'd go with Nick Skelton any day.

This might seem controversial with some, certainly above, but not putting a Paralympian in is an insult to their ability and achievements. The fact only 1% of the U.K. Can enter is irrelevant. If you listed 3 Paralympians and 3 Olympians and asked me who id rather swap places with, it'd be a straight 0-3 split.

Hannah Cockcroft is on course to be a double gold, if not triple gold medal winner, so if she does manage two or three, then her name should definitely be on the shortlist.

Interestingly she competed in the able-bodied pursuit at the 2010 Commonwealths coming 6th out of 13. She actually beat Laura Trott!

In 2012 I had a bet on Laura Trott at 80-1, as I expected her to be the only Brit to win 2 Olympic Golds. She did win both events, but didn't even make the extended shortlist

Bradley Wiggins took the award after becoming the first British TdF Champion as well as winning the Olympic time trial. Rory McIlroy was the only non-Olympian nominee.

My each-way punt this year is Lewis Hamilton: also at 80-1.

I would be shocked if the winner, or the top three were not all from Rio (so the Olympics or Paralympics), such is the high class calibre of people who have achieved success over there.

Downhill mountain biker Rachel Atherton has enjoyed the perfect season as she achieved the unprecedented feat of winning every single round of the MTB Downhill World Cup and the World Championships. If it wasn't Olympic year, that would arguably get a nomination.

A fantastic, sensational achievement, just so unlucky to have done so at a time of so many other great achievements.

Murray will be top 3 but that's for his Wimbledon win not his Olympic win. I'd wager if he didn't even go to Rio he'd still be the favourite he is today.

If he is there on the list, (which I fully expect him to be), then it will be in part because of him retaining his Olympic gold medal.

No it wont. It is for his Wimbledon win. He was odds on with the bookies from the moment he hit the winner at SW 19 and is still fav.

Do you seriously, SERIOUSLY, think that had Murray not won in Rio he wouldn't be a front runner ?
