Yeah he's really unpopular, it's not like he's already won the thing twice before or anything.

Personally, at the moment I think Anthony Joshua is definitely my choice but then, we don't know how the rest of the year will pan out. Could someone else come out and snatch it from him? Is it worth backing somebody else at slighty bigger odds?”

Looking back on the opening post about this topic, it certainly does look like a fair few people were not even on that list that now deserve to be!

How is Anthony Joshua suddenly become favourite

No , they are the odds compiled for contenders 6 months ago I think ,Joshua was originally a front runner and there has been a few who have now drifted out - vardy-Willet

Rightly or wrongly the TUE leak has probably put paid to Wiggins's chances of a nomination.

After seeing the dramatic scenes overnight my vote will go to Jonny Brownlee. That was an amazing and dramatic piece of sportsmanship and brotherly care.

Why he's not even featured on that long list of betting I don't know.

I assume you meant Alistair? I still wasn't entirely sure if he'd make the shortlist despite winning in Rio but he certainly will now.

The longlist is way out of date (no chance of nominations now for Jessica Ennis-Hill or Katarina Johnson-Thompson for a start).

I still can't see him being on the list

I can. The coverage he's got today will endear Ali to the public but more importantly those who draw up the shortlist.

Wasn't Jonny the brother in trouble?

Either way, I share your sentiment. If they were my sons I would be literally bursting with pride at such brotherly support, sportsmanship and everything else. To top it off, Alistair said he would have done it for any runner, and I believe he would too.

Wonderful, wonderful scenes. True Brits.

Actually can i change my mind ? Just noticed he has come right into 10/1 with Ladbrokes. I also got the wrong brother. Ali, who helped, is of course the Olympic Champion too

The shortlist I think will consist of nothing but people who competed either in the Paralympics or the Olympics, I just cannot see anyone else from outside of the Rio games getting a look in.

I'd wager Danny Willet and Gareth Bale are on it. Possibly Hamilton too

They have had a very good year no doubt, but do they deserve to be on the list ahead of so many people from Rio??
Not for me.

The BBC will feel obligated to include at least a couple of non-Olympians/Paralympians.

I too feel Danny Willet should be on the shortlist , which begs the question which is harder to win A majors tennis tournament OR A majors golf tournament ???

Australian open
French open
Wimbledon
USA open
OR
The masters
USA open
The Open
Pga open

Which is harder ? Danny Willet is a must for me !
Tiger Rose

Willett may be on it, would be surprised if Bale made it, Hamilton will be on it again if he wins another world title.

I think the following will definitely be on the shortlist:-

Mo Farah
Andy Murray
Max Whitlock
Laura Trott
Jason Kenny
Chris Froome
Kadeena Cox
Sarah Storey
Lewis Hamilton - if he wins the world title

That leaves 3/4 other places if we assume a shortlist of 12. I've listed some strong contenders below & listed them in order of who I think are most likely to make the cut. It'll be a tough task though and rather them than me.

Adam Peaty = yes 'only' 1 gold but it was a dominant performance in World Record time + it's been almost 30 years since a British man won Olympic gold & he's only the 2nd British swimmer to hold all major titles at same time.
Maddie Hinch/Kate Richardson-Walsh. = Given Leicester will likely win team award I think a nomination for 1 of the Hockey champs is a strong shout. Maddie for me had a bigger impact in Rio but I couldn't argue against Captain Kate
Nick Skelton/Charlotte Dujardin = Only 1 will get a nomination. Skelton is a great story but I'm not as confident as others he'll be on list. Wouldn't rule out Dujardin, her & Valegro have had an incredible few years .
Danny Willet = Any other year & he'd be a shoo-in to make shortlist but could miss out
Alistair Brownlee = Leaving aside his actions last night back to back Olympic golds in a tough sport like Triathlon is very impressive & may not be repeated for some time.
Hannah Cockcroft = If a 3rd Paralympian makes the shortlist it will be her

Would be surprised if anyone else made the short list. It does mean some worthy candidates will miss out but unavoidable this year.

Why so, the outstanding amount of people that were in Rio shows that this should be a Rio only list.

I reckon before the events of last night, Alistair Brownlee probably would have missed out on the short list, but in many ways what he did last night encapsulates the essence of what SPOTY is about in so much as the image of him helping his brother across the line is one that has captured the public imagination and will be remembered long after the name of the person who won the race is forgotten by most. It was a moment that transcended sport. So I feel now he is close to a dead cert to be included.

It's sounds great in theory but it has to have more sport than just Rio , the masters - Tour de France possible F1 title just can not be swept under the carpet ,they are some of the most watched sporting events in the world , Danny Willet putting on the green jacket is the stuff of legends that can not be just passed over ! It needs to be recognised

I am not sweeping the Tour de France under the carpet, as the winner of that is also a bronze medal winner at the Olympic games, so he is included in what I was talking about.

Amy other year Willet winning the green jacket would of course be in, but this is no ordinary year, and the sheer amount of extraordinary success in Rio just puts his achievement in the shade unfortunately.

Well I'm sure Danny Willets masters win is equal to single gold medalist winner SO if the short list is going to be made up of Rio champions then double/ treble golds is more likely going to be the cut ! If not then the short list will have 100plus so how many Olympians / Paralympians were there that won double/treble golds ? This could be the easy way to compile the short list

Personally, I think if Justin Rose has another great Ryder Cup he has more of a chance of being shortlisted than Willet. It has to be remembered that it's about making an impact with the public as much as anything else, and I think Willet's major win actually made less of an impact than Rose at the Olympics. Odds are I think neither will make it though.
