Rightly or wrongly the TUE leak has probably put paid to Wiggins's chances of a nomination.

After seeing the dramatic scenes overnight my vote will go to Jonny Brownlee. That was an amazing and dramatic piece of sportsmanship and brotherly care.

The shortlist I think will consist of nothing but people who competed either in the Paralympics or the Olympics, I just cannot see anyone else from outside of the Rio games getting a look in.

I'd wager Danny Willet and Gareth Bale are on it. Possibly Hamilton too

I too feel Danny Willet should be on the shortlist , which begs the question which is harder to win A majors tennis tournament OR A majors golf tournament ???

That leaves 3/4 other places if we assume a shortlist of 12. I've listed some strong contenders below & listed them in order of who I think are most likely to make the cut. It'll be a tough task though and rather them than me.

Adam Peaty = yes 'only' 1 gold but it was a dominant performance in World Record time + it's been almost 30 years since a British man won Olympic gold & he's only the 2nd British swimmer to hold all major titles at same time.
Maddie Hinch/Kate Richardson-Walsh. = Given Leicester will likely win team award I think a nomination for 1 of the Hockey champs is a strong shout. Maddie for me had a bigger impact in Rio but I couldn't argue against Captain Kate
Nick Skelton/Charlotte Dujardin = Only 1 will get a nomination. Skelton is a great story but I'm not as confident as others he'll be on list. Wouldn't rule out Dujardin, her & Valegro have had an incredible few years .
Danny Willet = Any other year & he'd be a shoo-in to make shortlist but could miss out
Alistair Brownlee = Leaving aside his actions last night back to back Olympic golds in a tough sport like Triathlon is very impressive & may not be repeated for some time.
Hannah Cockcroft = If a 3rd Paralympian makes the shortlist it will be her

Why so, the outstanding amount of people that were in Rio shows that this should be a Rio only list.

I reckon before the events of last night, Alistair Brownlee probably would have missed out on the short list, but in many ways what he did last night encapsulates the essence of what SPOTY is about in so much as the image of him helping his brother across the line is one that has captured the public imagination and will be remembered long after the name of the person who won the race is forgotten by most. It was a moment that transcended sport. So I feel now he is close to a dead cert to be included.

It's sounds great in theory but it has to have more sport than just Rio , the masters - Tour de France possible F1 title just can not be swept under the carpet ,they are some of the most watched sporting events in the world , Danny Willet putting on the green jacket is the stuff of legends that can not be just passed over ! It needs to be recognised

I am not sweeping the Tour de France under the carpet, as the winner of that is also a bronze medal winner at the Olympic games, so he is included in what I was talking about.

Amy other year Willet winning the green jacket would of course be in, but this is no ordinary year, and the sheer amount of extraordinary success in Rio just puts his achievement in the shade unfortunately.

Well I'm sure Danny Willets masters win is equal to single gold medalist winner SO if the short list is going to be made up of Rio champions then double/ treble golds is more likely going to be the cut ! If not then the short list will have 100plus so how many Olympians / Paralympians were there that won double/treble golds ? This could be the easy way to compile the short list

Personally, I think if Justin Rose has another great Ryder Cup he has more of a chance of being shortlisted than Willet. It has to be remembered that it's about making an impact with the public as much as anything else, and I think Willet's major win actually made less of an impact than Rose at the Olympics. Odds are I think neither will make it though.
