Froome has never got close with his previous Tour de France victories. The public just don't vote in their droves for him.

I watched Mo at the Anniversary Games yesterday, and he won with style. It's a lesser field than the Olympic one, but it got me thinking that a spectacular win in Rio might propel him into the top spot. The problem is that a spectacular win will have people wondering how he did it. Not enough to say he doesn't deserve it, but perhaps enough to make them less likely to vote five times like the rugby fans do. The track & field athletes in particular will face this problem, which is a shame.

For me that award goes to Phil Taylor, he has dominated his sport for such a long period of time.
Quote:
If he wins in Rio as well as having won the Tour he should be top 3 for sure but in olympic year it's hard to tell as people have already said. The UK in general have had a lot of sporting success over the last 15 years or so, it's not as if snooker players are really in the running anymore like they used to be.

Why should attaire determine if a sport is a sport??
Darts is a jolly tough sport, especially at the very highest level, the accuracy the top players like Taylor, van Gerwen and the rest show is unbelievable, the margins for error are tiny. The elite players practice for hours upon hours to get as good as they are, and boy does it show. That is why for me Taylor is our best sportsman of all time, he has dominated his sport for so long, and has won so many titles that I can't see that being surpassed in my lifetime. |

Surely Carl Frampton will be on the list this year (provided he doesn't lose between now and December?)

You're right it would be a massive shame. He's looking in great shape and If he wins another gold in Rio he's the best Brit T&F athlete ever - if he wins both he's a goddamn immortal. But, even though he released the results of 20 tests over 7 or 8 years before 2012 he will be tainted with the suspiscion of secret doping just like all other athletes. Maybe he'll just have to be content with a knighthood instead...
You have to go a long, long way to convince me that darts is a sport. Phil taylor is special, no question, but he's not a sportsman. It can't be a sport if you can play it in your pyjamas and bedroom slippers and still reach the same level of skill..... I think the BBC will push Froome this time round like never before (and rightly so) for his unprecedented success. I'm hoping so anyway, cos I've had a e/w punt on him @t 25/1. Also had a fun flutter on Nicola Adams as well e/w @ 80/1 ![]() |

I guess the argument does raise its head again, what are people's definitions of what a sport is, if some people are not classing darts as one??
Why is archery a sport, and not darts, when for the most part you are doing something very similar, trying to hit a target with arrows, just in darts' case, they are a lot smaller, and so are the targets. The accuracy that the very elite are capable of, is actually quite mind-blowing, and the hours upon hours of practice to get to the very top is testament to that. I don't really see how darts cannot be classed as a sport, amd the people who are involved very much are professional sportsmen. |

It doesn't matter what we class as sports or not it is what IS classed as a sport.
Darts is very hard to master yes. In my younger days I was a fairly decent player but these guys are sublime. Same with Archery, Fencing, Snooker, Pistol Shooting. All about hand to eye co-ordination. Sport doesn't mean you have to sweat bucket loads to be a sportsman. |

Anything you can become a world champion at with a pint in your hand isn't a sport in my view.

In your opinion which doesn't count for anything when the decision is made. Taylor did come second in the SPOTY of the year once. Whether its physical or not it is classed as a sport therefore he is judged the same as the others. I wouldn't give him any award but i wouldn't say he isn't a sportsmen when by definition he is. Just not in your book.

It's open to most in society, takes hours to master, participants are often professional, it's competeitive, prizes are on offer, it draws a crowd and the elite can do things ordinary dancers can't. What about competitive eating contests? Dressage? The world memory championships? I know what my definition of a sport versus a pastime or hobby is no matter how much TV time it gets and I'll give it to you - after you tell me yours......... |

Oh behave. Do I really have to qualify everything as my opinion when it clearly is? I don't think darts is a sport. The organisers and voters of SPOTY clearly do. Doesn't stop me arguing the toss or not voting for him on that basis.
I notice you didn't directly answer my question, so I'll try again. What do you consider a sport? Is chess a sport? It's open to most in society but takes hours to master, participants are often professional, it's competeitive, prizes are on offer, it draws a crowd and the elite can do things ordinary players can't. Darren Latham is dead right, there should be no discussion whatsoever as to whether or not darts is a sport as its taking the thread off topic.
We should just post the name of who we think will win and leave everything at that. Inclined to wait until after the Olympics. |

Ok fair enough, i give you that. But isn't this thread about who we think will win SPOTY 2016 ? in other words arguing over what we think is or isn't sports is taking it off tangent because the criteria is beyond our control.
There was a change to how the nominations were done recently, so there is a panel of people involved in sport, including a lot of retired athletes, rather than letting a list of people have one nomination each. In that time, we've also become a lot better at the more obviously sporty sports, so I'm not sure we'll ever see a darts player on the list again. |

Not really, because people who vote will factor in how much they value a sport, or if they think it is a sport. There are a lot of people who don't think that darts is a sport, or who think that the horse does the work in horse racing, and that driving a car definitely isn't a sport. Those people may be included on the short-list if the people drawing up the list are impressed, but it will dent their vote. However, there are people who will vote for their favourite anyway, and as you say, people in these debatable sports have often done very well at this award, so it's not the be all and end all.

Now back on topic I sincerely hope it is Mo this year, he so deserves it. Could be another bumper year of exceptional candidates Mo, Murray, Froome plus the Olympians. |

Mo, Murray, Froome plus the Olympians. It won't happen, but I'd keep my hand pressed down on the re-dial button if Laura Muir won the gold in the women's 1500. |

Someone or some thread - I think this one - mentioned Adam peaty. And I thought, "who's that?" Well I definitely know now! Not only a winner, but seems like a very likeable young man with a great backstory. It's still early days but I bet his odds have shortened lots......
