well, Murray is miles ahead as favourite. I don't think Whitlock will challenge for the top 3, perhaps the top 5.

It seems not, disgraceful decision no matter how dull he is.

I wouldn't have gone for Vardy, was considered a late contender last year when in the middle of his goal streak but hasn't done much in 2016.

No obvious reason to select Christiansen ahead of Firth, Baker or Cockroft.

Not immediately clear either why Adams should get the nod over other London/Rio double winners like Jade Jones, Dujardin, Glover and Stanning or Joanna Rowsell Shand.

I thought earlier they might go for 15 but another poster didn't think more than 12 was practical to cover on the show.

I have the feeling it's going to be something like -

1st - Andy Murray
2nd - Laura Kenny
3rd - Jamie Vardy

Overseas - Usain Bolt
Team - Leicester City

It's very tough in an Olympic year to please everyone.

Wow, no Lewis Hamilton, BBC gives up the rights to F1 and it seems to cease to exist.

He didn't win this year's championship, so he obviously wasn't going to be listed this time.

Second and Third could be anyones. But the rest seems pretty set in stone. There is a slight, slight chance that Michael Phelps could be Overseas but it is 99% Usain Bolts title.

Hamilton not being on the list is no surprise as he didn't win the title. Had he won I imagine he would have made the list. Such is the success in British sport being runner up isn't good enough any longer.

It's more surprising to see no room for Froome on a shortlist of 16 frankly.

I would go with Murray followed by Farah/Brownlee in either order. I see Brownlee getting a lot of votes on the night because his VT will focus a lot on him helping his brother, which will tug on the heartstrings of the casual viewer.

Otherwise, I tend to agree, although there is the chance Leicester already feel a bit like yesterdays news.

Froome and Farah are never going to win judging a lot of comments on here all the time claiming that they are not British.

agreed, I am not a fan of his especially, but he is fine sportsmen and his achievements should see him on the list. If it was still 12 it would be at least more understandable but with a shortlist of 16 its silly really.

I wouldn't take much notice of what people on here say about such things, remember all the rubbish they have said about Murray over the years!

There is no one close to Andy Murray.

Disgraceful that Jess Ennis-Hill is not there (unless she gets a special award) - there will never be another arse like hers in athletics. 😀

Indeed but Mo has never been in the running (pardon the pun) in previous years. I thought he would have been a shoo in in 2012.

At least they want to be British unlike Murray!

(P.S. I'm being tongue in cheek)

She doesn't talk through her arse like some sports people we could mention so wouldn't stand a chance.

I do wonder if in part thats been due to vote splitting with Ennis though, in so much as he is popular but Ennis was kind of the nations sweetheart (though not really mine )

I feel he will place this time.

Not sure. He deserves to though.

I'd go for:

Murray
Farah
Brownlee/Whitlock

Froome is unlucky not to get in I feel.

Cox third, Mo second, and Murray first would be my final three, bit of a cop out to include people who were not in Rio like Bale and Vardy ahead of far more deserving people like Cockcroft, and Froome.

Re Froome - If he was on the list, then it would have to be in place of another cyclist, surely. But which cyclist would you take out to replace him with ?

My personal top 3 would be Murray, Skelton, Trott.

Froome is a glaring miss when considering that the shortlist was made up of 16 people but he hasnt ever performed well at SPOTY and for a lot of the list this is their only chance to be nominated in 4 years. Particularly the Paralympians and Max Whitlock, Nicola Adams et al. It is about celebrating the Olympians and Paralympians primarily. Bale shouldnt be anywhere near the shortlist in my opinion.

Vardy is the obvious weak link, his record scoring streak came at the end of 2015 (but wasn't nominated for it) and has only got two league goals so far this season.

Also Froome is a road cyclist while the rest are track cyclists so no real duplication.
