The RTE Sportsperson of the year nominations were announced yesterday.

http://www.rte.ie/sport/other-sport/...ward-revealed/

Carl Frampton does get nominated for this one but Conor McGregor is the big favourite.

Wow, that list is stacked with great sportspeople, good luck trying to separate them, to find a winner!

I am not sure if that is a sly dig but tbf they have a limited pool of sports people!

(What about those rowing brothers who got silver in Rio?)

I suspect the list of previous winners isn't too shabby with the likes of O'Driscoll, Rory Mc and Harrington.

Suspect there might be more focus on the teams with the Irish football/rugby teams doing well.

It was not meant as a dig in the slightest whatsoever, it was meant as a compliment.

There are some very good and successful sportspeople on that list.

Strangely only one of the O'Donovan brothers was nominated.

The domination of GAA players is perhaps to be expected, but a double snub for Jonathan Rea and Bethany Firth. Surprised Jason Smyth was left off as well.

Oh, and to demonstrate my lack of boxing knowledge, Lewis was clearly better than Calzaghe as he could at least manage a couple of steps of ballroom dancing. So there”

Vardy is British though.

Mahrez would be in category of overseas personally

UK based foreign athletes are eligible under the rules to be nominated for the main award, however it rarely seems to happen in practice. Frankie Dettori came third though in 1996.

Well Murray certrtainly deserved it for being the first British winner of the men's singles at Wimbledon since Fred Perry.

Winning SPOTY for being part of the winning Davis Cup team was less obvious, though close runner up Kevin Sinfield was also a team member.

Jade Jones won the Welsh SPOTY award ahead of Gareth Bale (2nd) and Elinor Barker (3rd).

No.
This is the problem with Sports Personality of the Year - ie it's name.
Andy Murray should have won the Sports Acievement of the Year, not personality. ( as he doesnt have one)

They should change the title as it is meaningless these days to keep it as Personality

No.
The word personality has many different meanings and you have chosen to use just one.

Oxford English Dictionary says - The combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character: So yes he does have a personality. I think what you mean is he doesn't crack jokes or smile very often.

Everyone has a personality. Murray is strong willed, courageous, driven, determined, fair minded with a dry sense of humour. Just a few of his personality traits. It is your understanding of what personality is that is flawed. It's also quite tedious the way this nonsense gets dragged up every year, usually by the exact same posters.

You are just wrong, Murray has a very dry sense of humour, he is actually quite funny when he let's his guard down a tad.

Had to chuckle at this melodramatic telegraph article that fantasies Gareth Bale as likely to place top 3 so they can scaremonger about none of the top 3 possibly being there on the night.....

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/201...ree-finishers/

Quote:
“The organisers will be hoping for a strong vote for Alistair Brownlee, the triathlete listed by the bookmakers as the man most likely to break up the Murray-Farah-Bale axis.”

I would be surprised if Bale even was in the top 5!

Anyway, if it's the case that several other candidates aren't going to be there on the night, it becomes even less likely to impact on Murray's vote if he is absent.

What did Mo Farah say (or rather quoted as saying..)?

Agreed on Bale and Murray has won before without being there live.

Gareth Bale finished 8th when he was last nominated 2 years ago & suspect he'll finish in a similar position this year. He didn't even win the Welsh award last week, beaten by Jade Jones

Does anyone know if the winner of lifetime achievement is revealed before or during the programme

Surely it would kind of make a bit of sense if the regional winners were part of the chosen shortlist? As currently having no Jade Jones, but Gareth Bale there does look a bit strange.

As someone who retained their London title in Rio Jade Jones had as good a claim to be nominated as Nicola Adams.

Who is going to win Overseas Personality? Bolt again?

Ronaldo perhaps? he captained Portugal to Euro's glory (which for a small nation is amazing), CL win with Madrid and has won the Ballon d'Or. Basically a better season than when he last won it in 2014 I believe.

I don't know about absent on the night but Radio 5 Live breakfast have been interviewing all the nominees either live or off tape. That was until it comes to Murray who even in the closed season is seemingly too busy for a short phone interview so they end up having to speak to Leon Taylor about Murray' achievements.

I am not sure why this would make you angry, but you are surely aware that it is actually only a few weeks until the Australian Open, for which Murray will actually be in training for at this time of the year so its certainly not 'closed season' for him, quite the opposite.

Still hoping that Del Potro gets it because of his great comback this year from 3 years of a horrendous injury and operations. The Olympic final was my highlight of the year and then Murray and Del Potro went even longer in the Davis Cup semi and to cap it all he came back from 2 sets down in the penultimate rubber to win and help Argentina win the Davis Cup.

Ronaldo may have captained Portugal to the European Championship but Portugal were dire in most of their matches, Ronaldo was the same player he has been in previous season at Real.

I wanted to ask, who does anyone think will get the lifetime achievement award?

I thought Kathy Grainger was a certainty to get it, but Jessica Ennis Hill has since retired, so that has thrown a spanner in the works in terms of it being predictable.

Also, does anyone think there will be an award or special mention to Muhammed Ali or even Jonas Lomu who both passed away this year? Two iconic sportsmen, particularly Ali ever grace the world of sport.
