2009 (I think it was) must've been a bad year for British sport! lol

Giggs won it on sentiment at the time, can't have been any other reason. I mean, I'm a United fan and it's still a mystery to me that he DID win it!
the number of votes that year was relatively low and Manchester United really pushed his nomination, even telling people at the ground to vote for him.

Andy Murray has made two pieces of history tonight.

He's the first person to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award in successive years, and he's the first person to win it three times overall.
And he is the first person to win it while doing the Mannequin challenge at the same time

What has Mo Farah got to do to win Sports Personality
I would have put him up there. But maybe Alistair Brownlee got it for being a decent person as well as a fantastic athlete - that appeals to general voters and is worth valuing. And Nick Skelton's is a great story.

Bit of a shock not seeing Mo in the top three, but as I predicted, it was a Rio clean sweep.

Add the Marathon and win triple gold at the next Olympics?

They say Andy's our best ever sportsperson because he's successful in a very competitive international sport. But most wouldn't even have him in the top 5, may top 10 tennis players. What does that say about our sporting achievements?!!

He's recovering from an operation so has more important things to worry about.
He's already had his operation, surely with such a performance for and by his national team he should have appeared for them if not himself. He should have made an effort to thank all of Wales for giving him and the team such brilliant support. How long would a short video have taken?

I doubt he would have even watched tonight but somone should send him a video of Sophie Christiansen the paralympian who has overcome so many great disabilities and was a shining example and inspiration to others.

Wasn't it the year Jenson Button and Jess Ennis won their world titles - both quite popular sportspeople but guess the overwhelming support of the Man U fans won.

I wonder if Giggs would have won if his private affair had been outed beforehand?

Mo Farah has got to be one of our greatest ever athletes

And even if he wins two gold medals at Tokyo. He still wont win Sports Personality

How unfair is that

I think Nick will get a Knighthood

And one for Mo, Andy, Jason and a Dame for Laura
Agree about Nick. And Jason should get a knighthood if only because Chris Hoy and Steve Redgrave got one and he's equalled their achievements so it would be wrong for him not to get the same honour.

And Sir Andy for obvious reasons, really.

Funny to think as we saw them all tonight, they all know by now whether they've been knighted (and Damed!) or not!

I had no idea that Mitch Fenner or Christy O'Connor jnr had passed away this year. That was very moving as always.

Ok question time.

Gareth Bale was on the list but didn't record a video and didn't have anyone with him tonight otherwise he'd have surely done a video link up during his own mention and the Wales stuff.

Ok. So what if he actually went and won the thing?
I wasn't watching properly but didn't they say someone was in the room for him before they said who was in Dubai and Miami with Mo and Andy?

Nobody seems to be able to answer the question that I and another poster have asked: What exactly does Mo Farrah have to do to win, or even get in the top 3 for SPOTY? He has won double gold over the last four global championships, including two Olympics. No other British athlete has come close to achieving this and yet athletes have won it before. Cram, Radcliffe, Ennis and probably others who escape me at the moment, did not achieve what he has. How can there be three other people more worthy than him every single year?

Now there's a thought! Yes, he was shagging his sister-in-law at the time, wasn't he? Did so for 7 years.

Some people say it's the only thing interesting about him! lol

Hmm sceptical. So that would mean he was able to do a video link up if he won but couldn't be arsed to do one to say thanks for the support etc earlier in the evening. But who knows.

I wanted Jenson to win that year

And no, probably not.

He's been unfortunate in the respect that he has been in an outstanding era for British sportsmen, plenty of deserving people have missed out over the last 10 years. Gone are the days when you wondered who would be on the list, you now wonder who won't make it. I find it incredible that Chris Froome failed to make the shortlist.

Be born in Britain. There's a lot of dislike for him and Froome for some reason for not being 'true' Brits.
