I think it was a whole marathon but he only ran half of it ..? And there were things about him doing anything for money ... ? I remember he ran some race earlier this year and on the radio they were on about that, about some of the things he's done for the money not going down well ... something like that, I was only half listening!”

The thing is he's a sports person. What's he supposed to do.. turn the money down? He's got a large family. Other sports people make hundreds of thousands per week like top Footballers. Why shouldn't he profit from his own success? I don't see that as a reason for him not to get votes.

I think what really has hurt him is the claims made against his coach and the fact him winning has become rather routine now. His story isn't what it used to be. And that's what win votes with SPOTY... story. It's never really been decided by pure sporting achievement.

Sophie getting fifth is a tremendous result for her, and for the Paralympic movement.

Andy got 361,446 last year and that was mostly for a team win in the Davis Cup.

Where you watching it? There was quite a big blurb on it before the awards were announced because three of them weren't there.

Almost. A quick google tells us he was 7 when he left Jamaica.

Top 3 were pretty clear of the field there. Sophie and Kate placed much higher than I would have expected, good for them!

So Linford won one Olympic gold medal in his entire career. And won Sports Personality of the year beating Sally Gunnell that year even though he was not born here

on a side note, would like to point and laugh at the telegraph who claimed earlier in the week Bale was likely to place in the top 3....

And a lot fewer votes for some reason. Maybe people assumed Murray's easy victory.

Andy Murray is our greatest sportsman at present - thoroughly deserved.

Sadly that is the real reason. Too many bigoted, ignorant idiots out there who cannot see past what the Daily Mail/Sun tell them.

Especially (sadly) given the various political results of this year.

yep, its amazing how popular he is now, all those years on this forum defending him from people saying some pretty awful things about him (including one poster suggesting it was shame Hamilton didn't have one more bullet ) and finally these last couple of years it seems like people finally appreciate him.

Even the Kenney votes combined only make 5th.

Surprised Laura is so low and Max didn't finish over 5th and 6th. Peaty should have added the other Breaststroke event and will have been higher.

Had the been there, Frrome and Frampton would have been 30,000 votes, I would have thought.
