No chance. He was never in contention even after winning gold at 4 Olympics. He won the Americas Cup before didn't he?

Came 5th in 2013 after having helped Team USA win the Americas Cup. Can only do better for helping a British team win it

I don't think sailing has that much appeal to UK SPOTY voters. He deserved to place much higher in 2013 after winning 4 golds at 4 Olympics.

Re the 2017 SPOTY
Lifetime achievement could be between Mo Farah and Usain Bolt with both of them retiring next year. Or in Mo's case moving away from track to road. For the main award Andy Murray of course will be in contention, then providing a win against Klitschko Anthony Joshua will also be on the list. A Grand Slam in the 6 nations could see a rugby nomination. It seems there will be plenty of nominations coming from the World Athletics. Maybe another Golf major winner, that will take it up to about 7. Maybe if Jo Konta continues her progress we could see her on the list. If a snooker player can manage the calendar treble then 2017 may hold the best opportunity of a nomination. |

He came 8th for that in 2012. Lets face it we have been talking about a man winning 4 golds in 2 Olympics not winning it. Ainslie could be a shout for next year.

It's not as simple as that. Do you honestly believe a British born white christian athlete who won 2 gold medals at the 2012 Olympics in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres wouldn't have won SPOTY that year or even moreso this year when they repeated that feat? You're deluded if you believe that he hasn't won or even placed in the top 3 because his competition was so much better. You can't get much better than a GB athlete winning 2 gold medals in 2 long distance events twice at separate Olympics. If Seb Coe was competing now and achieved the same success he'd have won SPOTY 2 or 3 times by now.
It is just that we are living in an age where we are having unparalleled success, in a heck of a lot of different sports, so some people will have to miss out unfortunately. There can only be one winner if this title each year, so there will be people not picked that in previous generations would have perhaps won comfortably, but that is just how things are, it certainly doesn't have anything to do with a person's skin colour or religious beliefs. |

We have white people with three gold medals who were not even nominated, so why bring skin colour into it, it just makes no sense.

're Farah. I do think the "he's a somalian" was part of the reason he didn't come in the top three. Also the drugs problem with the trainer. Also because distance running is no longer an inclusive sport. Very few nations can win.
I was genuinely surprised about the second and third. But Murray was clearly the only winner this year, especially with the timing of his ascendancy to world number 1 in the only truly global world sport. Fantastic achievement. |

We've never actually won the America's Cup so it would probably get a lot of publicity. Much better chance for Joshua and Frampton in an odd numbered year should they stay unbeaten.

Giving the public a vote on anything will bring strange results (Brexit/Trump).
It doesn't always reflect on who deserves to win, and most people dont vote anyway. As it is, I think Murray was an obvious, and correct winner, but I do think Mo should have been a close second. I'd agree with those placings. Mo's races were my biggest punch-the-air moments of the Olympics, again. |

Who ? I wasn't only referring to his skin colour but his religion and birthplace. And I wasn't only referring to him not winning but not even placing in the top 3 for 4 years in a row when he has won 2 medals at Olympics, European and World Championships.
At least Mo has got nominated during his successful period, so I doubt very much skin colour or religious beliefs has anything to do with this, birthplace is still a bit of a flimsy reason, it just looks like something that is being pulled out of thin air, to try and match your belief, when it is more likely to be just down to the sheer unbelievable level of competition during Mo's peak success era. |

How do you explain Laura Kenny not placing? She has the medals and the publicity.
Plus cycling is not as high profile or popular as athletics.

She's a woman.

I don't know if you're being serious about the woman point. The emoticon would suggest you aren't which I hope is the case. Reaching for 'they're not a white man' at every turn is lazy and diminishes the achievement of the people who won.

The last time a woman won this award was Zara Philips in 2006 and that was just a token award because her mother won.
Why is it that not many women win this award |
