My husband fancied some damson or plum jam about 6 weeks ago and I have looked all over the place for either but I have had no luck .
All I can see are, blackcurrant, apricot, gooseberry, bramble, strawberry, raspberry, lemoncurd and blueberry.
I have looked in Sainsburys, Tesco, Waitrose, Asda and Morrisons as well as smaller local shops.
Any help would be excellent.

Thank You.

I have two jars of plum jam in my fridge right now, bought from Asda.

They sell their own brand and Bonne Maman, and I use them regularly for baking:

http://groceries.asda.com/search/plum%20conserve

Proper branches of Tesco also sell Tiptree plum jam and Sainsbury's do a couple of home brand versions. The only big supermarket I visit who never stock it is Morrisons. Aldi used to, but they stopped. Their jams also all contain glucose-fructose syrups. I just want proper jam made with sugar and fruit.

I appreciate that, thank you.
It will be a nice journey to Altrincham to Asda and Sainsbury's to see if they stock them.
Or I could ring first to save a journey of about 50 miles there and back.

Tesco do sell their own plum jam, and also do Hartley's damson jam and a Polish brand of plum jam too.

You're in Cheshire maddie?
Come September there will be loads of wild damson trees your way if you're up for jam-making come autumn. ( Dead easy)

Yes I am.

I did try making jam just once and that was at school and was a complete disaster, Miss Wiliiams our teacher said it had not enough pectin in it.
It was strawberry jam and very runny.

Strawberry jam is harder for those reasons you wrote. ( She should have assisted you more with the lemons. ) Tons of natural pectin in damsons, you don't need jam sugar or pectin as far as I remember. It has to be one of the nicest jams so your OH has good taste.

Damsons will be out in flower near you now I think so as you drive around it's a case of spotting the tree with its white flowers and then going back in autumn although it doesn't solve your immediate jam issue! Plum trees ditto, same time, same colour.
Probably spot them from the M60 on the way to somewhere else. ( Don't live near you any more, but the trafford water park etc/ hedgerows/ side of disused railways etc?)

I am a bit further south than the M60 more the Nantwich area.
It is a good idea though what you suggested about the disused railways we do have some of those around I never thought of that.
When I was younger me and my friend walked around the area where we lived and there was an lovely old man who we always spoke to as he was always in his garden
and he had a few damson trees in his front garden. He passed away a few years ago and by chance we built our bungalow about half a mile away down the lane.
His house has now been sold and all of his lovely garden including the damson trees have gone, the area is gravel with cars parked on it .

Damson Jam. Jelly, and Gin are all very easy to do.

We have some wild damson trees along a lane near to where we live and we pick the damsons every year. It was a very good year last year so this year might not be so good though.

We usually make Damson Gin when the damsons are picked in September and steep them until Christmas, bottle the liquor and store it until the following Christmas, it improves with age. We then used the gin-soaked damsons for damson crumble!! Highly recommended!!!

We make Damson Jelly for Christmas as an alternative to Cranberry Jelly.

Sounds delish alternative and damsons are a "superfood" too.
BIB That makes sense - winter weather hasn't been great for tree fruit. You are lucky - none near me now, would have to go 40 miles? It's too impractical to trek around scouring, even on a dog walk. (Planted a damson tree in garden here, not a single fruit. I'm back on the bilberry kick - now that is slow-going! )

The OP is in a great place - S. Cheshire as good as Lyth Valley Cumbria for damsons, she'll probably find some escapee plums too. ( We get wild plums here - not sweet enough. Learnt my lesson - if you're not sure of the fruit, make a small batch )

Never made the damson gin - tried the sloe and made a bad job of it ( not enough sugar)
Delia has a great spicy damson chutney too I can vouch for - brill with sausages, cheese etc.

Heathens!
I remember being a student ( this was 80's) and me and my BF at time used to go "foraging" , don't think word was invented finding an amazing old orchard of pears, plums, apples etc. in some kind of woodland clearing. Same thing happened to that.
Small island, a lot of cars, incl. me!
Good luck anyway. ( I only came on as I saw your first ever post on the oven gadget thread and people were taking the mickey, as they do, so I thought I'd popmpver to this thread & reply!

I just want to say thank you to all of you for being just so happy and helpful on my first thread on DS.
Now I know where to buy my jam, where to get my damsons from and your recipes which I will more than likely have a go at.

Love
Maddie

Double snap.
I had only ever seen that General news Discussion page until this week.
No idea about those food word games threads - can't see the point of them so I'll keep out of that.

That's nice - let us know how it goes.
Might take a leaf out of your book and even post a new thread myself, having never done that either.
Maybe on weird stuff out there, as far removed from damson gin as could be.
eg. weird processed food products - "here's canned aerosol cheese"

I did see some Bramble Seedless but to be honest I don't know if it was Robertson's
it could have been Sainsbury's own brand.

I've never seen tinned plums, only prunes in the UK. I din't know they existed here.

Tinned plums - maybe a place that stocks Polish food?

I have looked on the web sites and I can find red tinned plums in syrup but not juice at both Waitrose and Sainsbury's none of the others seem to stock them.
What I did find on Asda's was tinned figs, I enjoy fresh figs but I don't know about tinned.

When my kids were little, I regularly cooked crumbles or pies with tinned plums.
