If it's of interest, the Moto E 2nd generation (LTE model) is upgradable to Marshmallow, the latest Android release. Nearly two weeks ago, my unlocked Moto E got the upgrade. It went well and it's running fine, at least for my usage. Still, that's only one factor to consider, but it might be a decider if you want the latest firmware (unless you go the CynogenMod route).

I've just reviewed half a dozen budget Androids. The Moto E 2nd gen is pretty snappy in use, nicely built, and takes an SD card for expansion. It has good audio, but then does everything else. Speaker phone is very good.

If the 5 Mp camera is enough for you then it's a very good phone. Smaller size is a bonus for some.

The only bugbear is pricing. Two weeks ago these were £65 sim-free at Argos with a £5.00 discount card thrown in. Now they are around £76 in Amazon and Argos. EE locked Moto's are about £60.

Tesco have a sim-locked one for £59.95 but it's tricky to unlock. I haven't tried the vodafone.

If you can afford an extra £20 the Huawei P8 Lite from Carphone Warehouse is significantly better than any of the phones mentioned above. It has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage, which makes all the difference! Android with 1GB is really painful.

Plus, as it's a Carphone Warehouse-bought phone, it'll be unlocked and unbranded right out of the box.

It's a good phone, but it's more than an extra £20 compared to the Moto E, the cheapest price on PAYG is £119.99 and its £159 sim free.

Ah, it's gone up then. It was £89.99 plus a £10 top up a short while back.

You can get it as an upgrade from as little as £89.99 without a top up but that is dependent on you having an existing Vodafone or O2 Pay As You Go SIM that's used frequently. As Vodafone and O2 are really expensive on PAYG I doubt there are many people out there eligible for the upgrade price.
