Hi people
Getting a new dog and can't decide between 3 names , so I thought I put it out to a vote
To you guys

Rebel
Kyle
Billy

My dog is a male boxer dog

I like Rebel, its a bit different and would suit a boxer.

I read (or heard) somewhere that it's better to give a dog a two-syllable name, to help them recognise it more easily - sort of, to remove any shadow of doubt from the dog's head that it's their name. I think it's for training purposes. Of course, it's quite possible I'm talking out of my bum on that one, or my source was.

Going off that (rather shaky) theory, then Kyle's out, unless you call him Kyall. Or Kylie. I think Billy's too common for a boxer.

But I think boxers are of German origin, so why not go for a Germanic name? I looked some up:

Baldwin means "noble friend",
Bamard means "brave as a bear",
Bannan means "commander"
Barnard = "strong as a bear"
Berit = "intelligent"

... and there's many more. Once you get the dog, he might even show some personality trait which will lead you to a name. Post a pic when you get him?

If you could post a pic that would be great as it would be easier to see what suits him

That's true, but I remember when our two kittens were first born we named them with two girlie names because they were so pretty, but it became apparent after a couple of months that they really REALLY should have been called Minx and Princess. However, the girlie names stuck - we can't call them anything else, even though one's a little minx and the other thinks she's the heir to the throne.

I like human names, I meet a couple of terriers in the park called Trevor and Dave, then there is Eric the collie, fab names. Then you get Strawberry, cloud daft names.

Billy is nice.

Trevor and Dave, and Eric, are amazing names for dogs.

Rebel was the name of the dog on Champion the Wonder Horse, but he was an Alsation ISTR.

They are all very dull. If i had to choose i would go for Kyle

I need to see a pic before i can give you a good name.

Yes, that's true.

I'm a big believer in waiting to see what the dog's like before I name it, see what it's personality is like, etc.

Do you own a rather intelligent horse too, by any chance?

I like Billy. I don't like 'tough' sounding names like Rebel for dogs. I like names ending in Y, I find them easy to use and the few we've had without have ended getting one added or a slightly different name so I can add one!

I knew someone once who had a spaniel called Richard.

Haha! Amazing.

I don't know, and this is probably a minority opinion, but if I'd called a dog by a human's accepted name (Bill, Richard, Trevor, Eric, Susan, Jenny, etc) then the dog would feel more like a family member rather than 'just' a pet?

We once had a beautiful Golden Retriever we initially called Mickey. He was the softest, daftest, silliest, funniest dog I ever met, but my husband wanted to change his name to Sabre. He got his way, but I always thought of the dog as Mickey. He just suited it more than the name of a deadly weapon!

To be honest, the dog does not know the difference, you could call him dog and he be happy. He just learns if you say a word that he is suppose to come sit or whatever.

I love pets with normal names. The stray cat we adopted was called Robert before she was confirmed to be female.

I say call it Steve.

Haha!

My son got a kitten several years ago and called him Joe. When we found out he was a girl, he dropped the 'e'.

What name did you end up with for yours?

Of the 3 suggestions I would have chosen Billy too. I love to hear of dogs having human names, they sound funny but in a good way. Just don't call him Rover!

Call him Byron. I named mine that and it's a big conversation starter between dog owners you'll encounter out and about believe me. "0h, what an interesting name, how did you come up with that?", etc, etc.

How about Stanley? I've always liked that name and think it would suit a boxer.

For dogs a good strong sounding short name is best for that reason I wouldn't go for Kyle. Rebel and Billy both have a strong b so either would work but I tend to prefer actual names for dogs and cats so I would go with Billy.

Out of those Billy is by far and away my favourite. It's sweet. Kyle is a chavvy boy's name as far as I'm concerned and Rebel a bit old hat, and not in a good way.
