Hi,

I am in the process of changing my diet, I am going to cut out or limit as much as possible my carb intake, I don't have bread anymore or milk and cereals, going to keep wheat intake and gluten to a minimum. After researching stuff there's a lot of confusion though.
I have a banana for breakfast at work, which usually makes me hungrier, after researching it its down to the fructose in it and what it does to my body, now im wondering if they are that good for you as theres so much conflicting information on them, are they relatively new for humans to eat or have we been eating them for a long time?
This has all started because I started buying nature valley bars and belvita bars to have with my banana in the morning, but yet again after researching them they're just full of crap, loads of sugar.
Its interesting when you research the diet change in the 80s and look at people before that time, they all looked so healthy, now there's so many fatties.

For a start, don't cut out carbs. It's ridiculous the amount of people who think that cutting out carbs is part of the solution to a better diet. Carbs give you energy...energy to go about your day and energy to workout. You need to change the type of carbs you're eating, not cut them out. Start eating things like sweet potatoe instead of white potatoe, brown rice instead of white rice etc. In terms of what you're saying about Bananas, firstly if you're only having a banana for breakfast then that's not enough. Secondly, they release energy slowly throughout the day, so they're a good food to eat. Oats are another food that release energy slowly so are good to eat. You're right what you're saying about cereal bars...the same can also be said for a lot of foods that are labelled as "low fat" or "0% fat"...a lot of the time there's a reason why it has hardly any fat in it and that's because they use sugar and other additives to create the taste. Check ingredients properly on things like this. Also, just going back to what I was saying about carbs...if you're trying to loose weight then hardly eating any carbs is one of the worst things you can do as after a while of doing this your body is absolutely craving them and you end up going on a binge and this is what usually makes people on low carb diets give up.

Waste of money as well. You'd be better off slicing a banana into some porridge or making your own muesli. That lets you control sugars & mix up tastes/textures.

We're probably generally lazier now. Pre-80's cars weren't as common, so people walked more and cooked healthier meals instead of supermarkey convenience junk. Like Master Ozzy says, they may be fine for a quick sugar hit, but more traditional meals give a better slow release. But basic rules always apply, so if you eat more energy than you need, the body will store the excess as fat.

I dont think many advise cutting them out altogether. A carb limited low GL diet can seriously help weightloss and essentially gets rid of the sugar peak/trough so assoociated with cravings.

It's obviously not for everyone, for others it works.
A typical carb limited day would include heaps of colourful veg, lean meat, fish, salads, nice stirfry etc.

Bananas are also good if you have low potassium.

Bananas are quite high in sugars, but natural, unrefined sugars. Far better for you than a Nature Valley or any other kind of cereal bar which are all basically grains stuck together with several different types of refined sugar.

A lot of people are paranoid about weight, weightloss and food, start reading some article in the paper and then paranoia sets in.. what they must do is eat a sensible diet, everything in moderation, and usually the weight will look after itself,

In my opinion All Bran with a Banana produces the most regular and astoundingly healthy bowel movements that it is possible to imagine.

I apologise if this is too much information.

That is true. I'm only saying from experience as someone with an eating disorder, bananas are 'safe' food for many.

Bananas are good but not excessively, I personally would only have one or two per day.

Bananas are full of good things too though are they not? No idea why you're cutting out carbs but then again I don't understand anyone who thinks that is a good idea. Surely your body is just saying "erm I need more than a banana please thank you!." You broke your fast so your body is expecting something substantial. Going back in time, when I grew up in the 70s and 80s fat people were much rarer and guess what, we ate bread, potatoes and pasta. We just didn't eat huge portions of anything, we didn't eat much junk and I never saw the inside of a Maccy D's or similar (Wimpy actually) until I left school and even then I only ever ate that kind of stuff once in a blue moon.

I bloody love bananas. Give me a banana over a packet of crisps or a bag of chips any day.

you'll feel hungry after one banana for breakfast cos they only have about 80 cals each and are one of the fastest foods to be digested. 10 minutes and your stomach will be empty again.

they are good for your heart as someone else said about the potassium content.

Bananas are very good for you with plenty of nutrients. That said you should eat them when they are ripe with at least some brown dots forming. Otherwise it can constipated you.
