According to this article from The Guardian All Saints were pressured in the late 90s to go topless on Top of the Pops or risk being cut from the show.

I'm not saying they are lying but nudity on the BBC's Top of the Pops - even for a backdrop, as the article suggests? Something doesn't add up to me.

As I understand it, and IIRC, the story is that they weren't asked to literally perform topless, but to 'adjust' their clothing so as to give the impression they were topless. Lord knows why though. It must have made sense/ seemed like a good idea to someone at the time. I think the video and/ or publicity shots possibly featured them similarly bare shouldered, so it may have been to do with that.

Whether they're actually lying or exaggerating I've no idea, but the same story did the rounds at the time twenty or something years ago. It was never denied by anyone from TOTP, so presumably it's more or less true.

In the late 90s the show went through a phase of pre-recording a static performance of the artist to put on the screens behind them, often just a head and shoulders shot. I suspect it's this performance they're talking about

Of course they would never have shown anything on screen, but it's a bit off that they were asked to actually take their tops off. I wonder if any others did do it.

Ah!

I remember the Jackie/Jockey Wilson confusion.

Incidentally, is the audience screaming because the lead singer is singing out of tune?
