Changing Phones

Just a general query regarding this as I cant seem to get anywhere with he phone companies.
I had an I phone 4 which I gave to my son when I upgraded, He was with t mobile so I had to get the phone unlocked by O2 for him to be able to use on there network. Since then he has now moved over to vodaphone and with a new handset and my wife has decided she would start using the I phone 4. She is with vodaphone and went in to get a new sim that would allow her to use it, however despite 3 attempts with a new sim it still comes up as no service available. Would it be possible that because my son used it on the t mobile network they have locked it to theirs and hence the reason it will not work on the vodaphone network.?
I was of the belief that when the phone was originally unlocked then it was good to use anywhere

Once unlocked by Apple it's always unlocked, the chances are it has to be a simcard or phone issue if it won't accept the sim.

Have you tried putting the Voda sim in and then restoring the phone through iTunes?

Once an iPhone is properly unlocked it works everywhere. A full restore (on the phone or iTunes) is not normally necessary as it wipes all the settings and apps, and it takes ages to put them back.

I assume you've put the Vodafone SIM into the phone and done a full reboot, holding both the sleep/wake and the home buttons at the same time until the apple logo appears?

I had reset the phone when my wife said she wanted to use it, we have had three different sims from vodaphone and none of them work.
