Grits are great. You can eat them all sorts of ways and they won't complain a bit. They're there for filler, like mashed potatoes or rice or porridge. If you eat farina (I think that' the generic way to refer to cream of wheat) or the above mentioned polenta, which is just a different grinder plate size (okay, and usually yellow corn rather than white) then you can eat grits.
When I was a kid, I'd eat them with butter, milk and sugar, but then again, that's how I ate all hot cereals. Later, I learned the way to eat them without getting side-eyed was with butter and salt. They work both ways, truth be told. Cheese grits are good too. Especially with a little jalapeño to give them a kick.
