Just for fun...

I've had several introductions to singers and bands by hearing them played in record shops.

Chilly Gonzales, Melody Gardot and Passenger amongst them Rival Sons, and today Sturgill Simpson.

Anyone else found a new musical friend this way?

First problem, is finding a music shop.

These are disappearing fast.

Many of the independents, records/cds/instruments/sheet music, have disappeared and I was never impressed with Dawson's.
Sheet music sales have dropped dramatically as most can now be bought on line more cheaply, so one avenue for shops has disappeared. Internet sales have hit them too, I saved nearly £500 buying a tenor sax on-line.

On the positive side, new artists don't need to find one to get a bit of exposure, there's YouTube now.

I've posted this before, but it's worth seeing.

Even moderately successful artists with a few CDs behind them, will perform in record shops. "Only those who can sing or play well live, should apply."

There used to be a music shop - maybe Rough Trade? - in Covent Garden and I stayed in there for ages one day because they were playing this weird jazz-drum'n'bass fusion. In the end I had to ask what it was and bought it (Triptycal by Ben Neill). Another time I went to Bexhill-on-Sea for a day trip to the seaside and ended up mooching around in Music's Not Dead (great shop) for ages because they were playing Father John Misty.

Went into Rise in Worcester (another great shop) as I was in the area and wanted the new White Denim, and they were playing it in the shop. Felt slightly awkward but the guy complimented me on my choice.

Conclusion:, it's great when the shop plays music you like, and you'll probably buy it.

Oh, and OP I must check out Sturgill Simpson.

It's a great thing for sure...I had heard of the fella but never really heard him. It was his new one that was on...it's really good, wee worth a punt.
