TBF Amanda wasn't really original saying Beckham.. and David tea (he was drinking it).

But great trick. Still don't know how he did it.

For me, the thing I like about magic is not how 'magical' it is, it's about how clever it is, and how well and entertainingly it's carried out. For this reason, I used to love the secret magician shows where they showed how a trick was done. It never ruined anything for me, cos we all know these things are based in deceit and 'trickery', it made me appreciate the tricks more, appreciate the skill that goes I to the practise and performance each time.

I quite liked his act.

I enjoy 'close up' tricks, as opposed to big theatrical performances where, for example, someone makes a car disappear or cuts people in half.

Everyone knows magic is, for want of a bet word, a scam, and that the props could be bought for a few quid online (I had one of those electric shock gismos when I was a kid, donkeys years ago)

The skill is not in the trick/magic/illusion per se, it's in engaging the audience, and taking them with you, so although they know it's a scam, they still think 'that was clever'

Put some work in and then let everyone ruin your many hours of work and then you will have learnt what it feels like.”

I was merely posting my theory. I was in no way tarnishing the act! I thoroughly enjoyed his trick, but like a poster above, my favourite part about magic tricks is then finding out how it's done.

He was on This Morning yesterday performing a couple more tricks.

When you consider that Jamie Raven came 2nd last year and he didn't perhaps have the good looks of this lad,nor the military back story, then I reckon he'll go close to winning this year.

If you want to know how it was done then read on, if not then please don't (I don't want to spoil it for anyone and I have no gain in status, imagined or otherwise):

I used to do a similar trick when I was a kid but I had a giant pack of cards not a notepad. it's all to do with the way you flick through the pad (every other page is shorter than others) so when you flick through them from the front to the back you will only see the longer pages which all have different things written on them, but when you go from the bottom upwards (ie lifting the pages up) you will only see the shorter pages which all have the same thing on them. And the Beckham cut out was pre-prepared along with the can of hot tea.

It was quite well done but the guy doesn't have much of a personality to carry it off, he needs better banter, and the problem with close-up magic of this kind is that it works a lot better in smaller venues.

Nothing to gain... so why do it?

I mean I could have done the exact same post as yours with far more detail and history and tips on method back on post 2, but why would I do that? I wouldn't and so I didn't.

It is somewhat unfortunate that you gave up magic as you are now not in a position to appreciate what it's like to have all your hard work ruined by someone claiming they have nothing to gain.
