Well established artists resorting to Pledge music & Kickstarter
http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/tiffany
Thats Tiffany's pledge page. It means she can make her music, deliver it to fans, and not do what the big labels want her to. Its all her stuff. Her latest album is a mix of rock, country, pop & ballad. What are your thoughts on artists having to do this? are they being let down? What other artists do you recommend using this? |

I bought two albums this way idlewild and Filter but it is a risk as you are committing without hearing a track and sometimes spending much more than if you had waited and bought it traditionally but if nobody did it this way the album would never come out so its a gamble

TLC are probably the highest profile act to use Kickstarter to fund an album

I think it's a good idea provided the artist handles it professionally and doesn't take too long in actually releasing the album.
Unfortunately, there have been a few artists that have spoiled it for everyone else, because they take people's money and continue to delay the album release and give their fans no update on when the album will be released. Pledge Music is better than Kickstarter because they will give you refunds if the album is not released or at any time before the album comes out if you don't want to wait. |

I actually just got back from recording in the studio with an upcoming hard rock band called "The Amorettes", thanks to PledgeMusic I was able to play guitar on their album and I have to say it was one of the best experiences of my entire life. Hung out with some very cool people (the band were ace, the other 4 lucky pledges were all very friendly and Luke Morley of Thunder was there as the producer and he was incredibly nice), fulfilled a dream of playing guitar on a record, did some backing vocals and then got to hang out with the band well past the studio time.
So as far as I'm concerned, PledgeMusic can be a real treat for the fans when used correctly, and honestly I almost wish more bands were offering similar experiences. (Also would recommend checking out The Amorettes if you're a fan of Joan Jett, AC/DC or Billy Idol) |

I would suggest that MKS should do it for the album they promised. |

Idlewild use Pledge, as do older acts like OMD, Gary Numan and Peter Hook.
Those are the ones I've invested in this year. |

IAMX made a great album last year funded by Pledgemusic.
It's encouraging that there are upsides to the rise of the internet for musicians to counter the much-publicised downsides. |

I think it's great. A lot of artists who may not sell millions of records could do this, without the pressure of meeting targets of a record label.
