I find 3's 3.5g more than fast enough for everything I do on data. I use a path EE sim in the iPad and that shows some very high data speeds of 90meg or so when I go down to Cornwall. So, I'm more concerned with good data coverage that performs well, rather than whether it happens to be 3 or 4g.

Same as.
But H+, H or 3G displaying on your smartphone aren’t necessarily poor in themselves. They are good here e.g. Again it’s a location based thing. H+, H and 3G (if you can pick them up and get a good connection) is far better than getting no mobile signal at all. |

Well it says worst coverage, but best speeds for 4G - so if you are in an area covered by their 4G then Three is possibly going to be the best for you!

4G is, at least in in my experience, overrated! In many places I have had almost as good speeds from 3 on their 3G network. That's after moving from EE to 3!
BT 4g = 30mbps (capped) BT 3g = approx 17mbps 3 3g = approx 7mbps 3 4g = not available These are roughly the evening speeds I see from my house. |

I'm guessing you want a different network to your other half for emergency people calling you and the network being down and not you calling out?
If so don't EE share masts with Three and if so if there is trouble with a mast could this cause issues on both networks? Just a thought and not sure if it ever happens? |

They did share masts in the past but I believe they have stopped doing so now.
They have an infrastructure share managed by a joint venture company called MBNL. |

Which does seem to be doing a creditable impersonation of a glacier since the o2 takeover became known about.
It is not clear, and nobody will obviously say for certain, just have to wait and see what the EU says in May about the Three purchase of O2. |

I have been spending my time between two houses for some months. One has ADSL with a speed of about 7Mbps/0.8Mbps while the other has Super Fast Fibre with 76Mbps/18Mbps. For 90% of the time the experience when using the Internet is pretty much indistinguishable. Of course downloading large files can be 10x quicker but browsing websites is no faster & apps like iPlayer are the same. Once beyond a certain minimum acceptable level most of the time the speed of the connection is irrelevant. The same holds true for mobile whether connecting with 3G at 5Mbps or 4G at 50Mbps if you are browsing Digitalspy you won't notice the difference.

EE and Three very much do still share masts!

While maybe the case in various parts of the UK, I can't say that such MBNL mast exist where I live, only because if you compare EE and Three network coverage for the same area, EE definitely covers the area and blankets it with 4G whereas Three only covers some areas so you end up with a patchwork situation of signal coming and going.

As both are quite satisfactory for my use 4G would seem not particularly relevant to me - but I have noticed my (3 network) handset saying 4G more often recently! |

You won't notice this so much between fixed line connections where latency is generally good, but it can be a nightmare with 3G. I guess what I'm saying is that raw download speed isn't everything, but from a holistic perspective 4G gives a much better experience. |

Is there some sort of computer controlled rota that makes this question appear at set intervals?

Only that it's a perfectly sensible question. what is the point of high speeds with low data allowances. One could even argue that it's a disadvantage

what is the point of someone with say 500MB (not uncommon) having 4G. They will use it in 4 minutes if they download at 100Mbps.
How does that really differ with the person having a slower 3G connection and taking an extra 10 minutes to download the file? 500MB is 500MB whether downloaded on 3G or 4G. Does it really matter if you burn through your monthly allowance in 14 minutes rather than 4 minutes? You are making an argument against stupidly small allowances rather than why slower speeds are better. Before you mention the 4G streaming video chestnut, it can be avoided by just choosing a lower quality setting as default. |

Let's put it this way. Once I have a speed that is adequate (say 15-20Mbps), I would far rather double my data allowance than double my speed. In this sense then speed increase is a bit pointless as there's not any more you can do with it.
Have you seriously not taken part in this discussion any of the previous times it's been discussed? |

Rehashing (for probably the 10th time) if your 500MB download comes down in a quarter of the time it has a positive effect on battery life and means the base station connected to is under less strain for more time so can cater for more connections over that longer period the slower download would take...
Have you seriously not taken part in this discussion any of the previous times it's been discussed? All I can say is that being a techie I have had 4G since the day it was available, but quite frankly I have never seen it as an appreciable benefit. |

Who said anything about 3G/4G with 500MB? I was referring to the stupidly small maximum data allowance of 20GB offered by EE.

Cellular isn't a replacement for wifi. It's additional. Three is now discovering this. |

20gb is small ?? In whose world ?

It's surprising how much data you can actually use nowadays and it's nice to be able to use your phone when you want for what you want without being handicapped by a very low allowance. (in my circumstances anyway others will use wifi or hardly any data) However I would say 4gb a month should be the absolute minimum nowadays for 4g irrespective of how much you actually use as you never know when you may need that extra data. |

It may not be of obvious benefit to end users. Its a big benefit to the networks.
If EE want me to use 4G then give me more of it.
