When are we going to depart from the 'modern day gobby female' stereotype?

Need to get back to a more jo grant type character that the doctor has to explain things to rather than a know it all like clara.

Well, Bill did ask a lot of questions!

She only had a few lines to say but she still managed to come across in those few moments as a dreadful actress.

I can't say anything on the companion because by all means we haven't really seen anything of her, but Pearl Mackie herself seems like a lovely and charming person. She may not have been who I was hoping for, but regardless of how her character turns out I'm glad to have her on board.

Her sense of fashion makes it come across that she's from the 80s or early 90s. We will wait to see if this is the case.

Well I know nothing about her other than that clip, but whoever thought of that way of introducing the character wasn't doing her any favours. The trouble is that's the image that is going to last for many months before we get a chance to actually see the story.
I hope not but I think for more than one reason we might see a low point for modern Who next year, and looking forward, the most important decision since its comeback is who is going to follow Capaldi.

Do you know her personally? I don't understand how you can't form an opinion based on the actual clip but you can form an opinion on her personally, based on....nothing? Contradictory, no?

I said she seems lovely and charming, seeing her in interviews, so no... not contradictory at all?

That's an opinion though, formed on the basis of a few minutes of footage. Same thing essentially.

And what does it matter if she's charm and erudition personified in person? She's not playing herself in Dr Who is she? I've been out for drinks with Alex Kingston (and a couple of friends) and she's very nice in person but I loathe the character of River Song, her playing of it and the way it's written. It's what's on-screen that counts and for that reason it's fair game to form an opinion on the character "Bill" (groan) based on the clip - Why else would they release it if they didn't want online discussion like this?

But as I already said, I don't know about the character yet, I was just commenting on Mackie as a person that she seems lovely, and I'm often as interested in the actors themselves as much as the characters they play. I really don't understand what's bothering you so much you're trying to pick apart my comment...?

Thanks for the clip, CD93!

This "Meet the Companion" clip shows she's quite nice.
I thought the introduction clip on TV last night is meant to introduce new viewers to the show, not just show off the new companion. Might be a theme with the new series.

It's contradictory in this context and in the final analysis, irrelevant what she's like "as a person" as I tried to illustrate with the Kingston/River Song example.

Next time I want to compliment a person who comes across as nice to me, I'll make sure to check it through with you first... :/

I have about as much of an opinion on Bill as I do on Class. Not much of one until I see more.

Not a fan of her portrayal in that skit last night (the almost-laugh at the end of each sentence was irritating), but I can't imagine that would be remotely indicative of the character/portrayal as a whole - far too short to form an opinion.

So I don't like what I've seen so far, but I also don't think we've seen remotely enough to have an opinion on anything.

I'd imagine we'll learn more in this month's DWM.

None. The introductory clip was crap, but I'm happy to ignore that and form an opinion once she's had her first proper episode... which is anywhere between a year and 18 months away still (unless she's in the Christmas episode, which I suppose is possible).

you are all missing a massive spoiler in that tiny promo for the new companion, no-one has clicked yet and I will not reveal what it is until someone does.

Like it.

Got a good potential vibe between Peter and Pearl (sounds like a folk duo) but waay too early to say. So obvious option is obvious.
