Will the millionth finisher cross the line before live coverage ends on BBC One? With about 36,000 needed to hit that milestone today, perhaps not.

I wonder if 'Walter Neff' is running again this year ?
If you're not sure what I'm on about Walter is a DS poster who's about 80 years old and who ran the Marathon...................I think it was last year |

Looks like none of the British women are going to meet the Olympic standard for today (Dixon and Samuels already have it - they just need to be top-2 for auto qualification).
----- First 10km for the elite men - 28:37. That's around 2h01m pace.

I assumed they'd find said finisher today as the organisers of the Great North Run (which actually handles more runners IIRC) did so a couple of years back. Oh well.

Men's elite leaders halfway in 1:01:24!
If the winner maintains said pace over the second half, that's a WR by 9 seconds. ----- Tim Peake has certainly made a name for himself this year! |

For anyone wondering who Tsegai Tewelde is - the Eritrean-born athlete has lived in the UK for about 7 years and is now eligible to represent GB - indeed, he's ahead of the others. Looks like Hawkins will also be a top-2 Brit today.

Dixon and Samuels looked to have bagged automatic qualification as they lead the other Brits. At the head of the women's race, defending champion Tufa is up against Sumgong - surprisingly, Keitany is not with them.
Kipchoge or Biwott could win the men's race in a WL and course record at least (if not a WR). |

I see...apparently Sumgong fell too (or rather, was tripped), and she still wins! (Around 2:23 - slow and tactical like last year)
Tufa and Kiplagat make the podium. ----- Leading men reached 30km in 1:27:13 - that's a WR in itself! |

Callum Hawkins has just passed world record holder Dennis Kimetto* in the London Marathon.
Never thought I'd say that!! [* For another 5 minutes or so, perhaps?!] |

Kipchoge wins in (unofficially) a 2:03:05 WL/PB! He didn't know the WR was on...what if? Still, the win's the main thing.
Biwott also sub-2:04! The legendary Bekele made the podium in a mid-2:06 despite not coming to London with the best preparation. |

Kipchoge is gutted.
Maybe they should make it clear on the front cars if the leader is on WR pace in the later stages? |

Callum Hawkins is definitely qualified - first Brit and a sub-2:11 PB to boot. (Eighth in the race)
Tewelde sub-2:13 on his debut - as the second Brit, he's qualified too. Derek Hawkins also under 2:13, so he's in the fight for that third discretionary spot. |

Kipchoge has won 6 of the 7 marathons he's contested, including 4 consecutive events (sub 2:05) at WMM level. That's impressive.
For anyone interested, here's Tewelde's back-story (from May 2013). |

Maybe they should make it clear on the front cars if the leader is on WR pace in the later stages? Great run by Callum Hawkins. The end of Kimetto's brief reign seems confirmed- 2 DNFs and a 2:11 in his last 3 marathons. Video of Sumgong, Keitany & Mergia's fall - https://twitter.com/BBCSport/status/724188857202135040 Great effort by Sumgong to win. It looks like she really hit her head hard. Good debut by Charlotte Purdue. Her Rio fate is in the selectors' hands now. Such a shame that Jess Coulson got injured in that Frankfurt Marathon (on 2:29 pace for 20 miles). She'll have a tough time getting on the 10k team I think. |

Apparently the official number of people registered to start was (I think) 39,698. 40k next year?
Hopefully next year's elite British fields will be as deep as this year's, seeing as berths in a home World Championship marathon will be up for grabs... ----- 3:35:21 for Tim Peake in the ISS. Nicely done.

Eliud Kipchoge could definitely have broken the record I think, just needed to break a bit earlier.
Will be interesting to see what the selectors do with the 3rd british pick. I'd select Derek Hawkins, he's not quite as young or talented as his brother Callum but at 26 he's still relatively young for a Marathon runner. I don't see them taking Purdue - having set a higher standard compared to the IAAF British athletics aren't going to go back on it even though she's young & made a promising debut. |
