Unfortunately their are a many a person who will fall for the advert and it's gimmicks, whether easily swayed, mental ill health, elderly or otherwise.

Some of the adverts miss out important information or are economical with the truth and think a bit of humour or a person not wearing much etc etc will hide the truth, but we're not all that gullible.

I'm the same with money - if it fits what I think something is worth, then I may buy it, but not based on an advert.

Fortunately, i'm married to a woman who is much more critical of discrimination (and card playing/being fake offended) than me. She hates adverts/people that think they talk for all women or human beings. It's a shame that our society is all about one-up(wo)manship.
Well I am in my 60's so probably "elderly" to some younger FMs but I can assure you I am capable of thinking for myself and certainly not influenced by these ridiculous ads. What is this attitude towards anyone over 50 being doddery, gullible old fools? Oh wait....could it be TV ADS having an influence?? Specsavers for example? Not the John Cleese one but previous versions...
Rant over, my current annoyance is the one featuring Keith Lemon. That character is so bloody annoying that I neither know nor care what he is advertising.

Don't know what the advert is for exactly (wine gums or summit?), but the one where adults are talking and their voices are dubbed with kids' voices. Awful.
Totally agree, it makes me cringe.

I think they missed a trick though, because if the adults had not tried to do babyish body language, but instead looked formal and adult, with the kids voices coming out, it might have been funny.

"In 2008, just 3.6% of the world’s creative directors were female."

There are plenty of women employed in the advertising industry, but I'm assuming they're mostly as PAs, secretaries and receptionists (with heels) because the 'creative' side is male-dominated to a ludicrous degree. The fact is that these 'anti-men' adverts are created by men for women because women make the majority of purchasing decisions in a household. I actually think there'd be far less of this 'reverse sexism' if there were more women involved in the creative side of advertising!
There is no such thing as reverse sexism.
Sexism is just sexism and the reverse of it is respect for the opposite sex.

It seems that the men making these adverts know their audience if women are the ones who do most of the shopping in a lot of households and they are successfully speaking to their misandry so why do you think this would lessen if more women were creating adverts?
Surely they would want to keep up the winning formula and go wild making the sort of empowering adverts that they would want to see themselves in.
All this is is reflecting modern women's attitude towards men it seems because other than a few women on here I dont hear women complaining about this.

In fact when you listen to women complaining about adverts is about the women being beautiful not that men are seen as idiots.
There's usually an excuse as to why thats acceptable

and as I always say, "Positive discrimination is still discrimination, Apartheid was 'Positive discrimination', in favor of white people"

Who says they know their audience or that they are 'successfully speaking to their misandry'?

I think it possibly could lessen if more women were creating the adverts because, believe it or not, most women don't hate men and aren't gripped with a desire to see them ridiculed and belittled at every turn. I would like to think that women are more likely to be aware of this fact than a bunch of smug overpaid w*****s throwing ideas around in an advertising agency in Hoxton. However, I did insert a caveat in my original post that I was possibly being over-optimistic, as I suspect that working long term in advertising (as in the media and politics) leads to a degree of cynicism towards and contempt for the little people out there (that's you and me) that might supersede sex, race, class etc.

It's bizarre because it's not like they're using some groundbreaking whizzbang new technology to produce them, they look crappy and old fashioned to me.

I'm not completely positive but I think they have a couple saying they needed a new washer. Erm hello, a washer is something inside a tap as far as we are concerned here in Blighty. It's a washing machine, okay??!!! I expect the next couple/frazzled mum/dad will be in need of a new stove (instead of a cooker). Grrr.

The woman measuring the other woman where she says “DD maybe AA at a push”... Huh? I know the ad is about how smart meters don’t approximate, but it would have made more sense if she’d said “DD, maybe E at a push”, I mean DD is a moderate size, AA is the smallest size (as far as I know), not that I’m an expert on boob sizes or anything…

---

The Peugeot ad with the smug git “what if we didn’t buy cars based on image?” err, how do you know we don’t? Still, “Image” is quite an umbrella term. I presume he’s referring to snob image of the badge and there are lots of people who don’t, but if he means image as in the cars image of reliability, how it is to drive, build quality ect... then why shouldn’t we do that? That's just called, being discerning, though I do agree, if we ignored all that we probably would end up with a Peugeot

I was thinking older than your age. More late 70's and upwards, so you need not be offended as I did not specify an age.

All I can go on is seeing women's reactions to adverts which is usually laughter.
We are constantly told, and proudly, that women do the bulk of shipping.
These adverts work.
These products sell.

Combine that with how men are portrayed in media for instance soaps which are watched mostly by women and I don't see women complaining about the dumb useless male trope there.

If the only complaints about the way genders are portrayed in media are about getting more strong female characters and whether a woman's to sexy or meek what is there to make me think that more women in advertising will have any positive effect on how men are shown.

Nothing from any other form of media that has more women involved has bucked this trend.
In fact continued it.
Do I think this will change?

Yes.look at the horrible sexist adverts of the past and how women were used in them and we don't do that now but I dont think it will change soon.
The ad men (and women) go where the money is and changes only happen because certain people and groups make it happen so most likely we'll be stuck with dumb male/smug female for a while and we won't have slim attractive women in adverts as that's the big issue at the moment.

All my opinion but there you have it.

I don't mind the fat guy., wish I could move like that, but the fat arsed guy in tight shorts and heels.

I don't understand but if he's making money off it and doesn't have to work 9-5 then fair enough.

so did films in the 1930-5os- show stupid black people, "Amos and Andy" black railway porters etc. but THEY wouldn't be allowed today

true but that does excuse the way that men being shown today, any more than the way the nazi treated us Jews would allow us to do the same to Germans today.

in other words, what happened in the past does justify injustice today

Oy I'm in my late 70's and I'm not middle class I came from the back streets of Pezst, that's the poor South side of Budapezst, the North side is the posh side, a bit like North and South London, you know in Norh London they have Blue Plaques "Someone famous once lived here", in South London the are Yellow A'board "Did you see this murder".
Haven't done too badly, own a house worth well over a half a million, by following my game plan, never turn down an acting part, always pay my taxes and marry the daughter of a millionaire
