I think it possibly could lessen if more women were creating the adverts because, believe it or not, most women don't hate men and aren't gripped with a desire to see them ridiculed and belittled at every turn. I would like to think that women are more likely to be aware of this fact than a bunch of smug overpaid w*****s throwing ideas around in an advertising agency in Hoxton. However, I did insert a caveat in my original post that I was possibly being over-optimistic, as I suspect that working long term in advertising (as in the media and politics) leads to a degree of cynicism towards and contempt for the little people out there (that's you and me) that might supersede sex, race, class etc.”
All I can go on is seeing women's reactions to adverts which is usually laughter.
We are constantly told, and proudly, that women do the bulk of shipping.
These adverts work.
These products sell.
Combine that with how men are portrayed in media for instance soaps which are watched mostly by women and I don't see women complaining about the dumb useless male trope there.
If the only complaints about the way genders are portrayed in media are about getting more strong female characters and whether a woman's to sexy or meek what is there to make me think that more women in advertising will have any positive effect on how men are shown.
Nothing from any other form of media that has more women involved has bucked this trend.
In fact continued it.
Do I think this will change?
Yes.look at the horrible sexist adverts of the past and how women were used in them and we don't do that now but I dont think it will change soon.
The ad men (and women) go where the money is and changes only happen because certain people and groups make it happen so most likely we'll be stuck with dumb male/smug female for a while and we won't have slim attractive women in adverts as that's the big issue at the moment.
All my opinion but there you have it.
