Said it before here, there seems to be a trend of women in ads, especially young girls rolling their eyes at literally EVERYTHING, I even saw one once where a guy opened an oven to reveal a meal he'd cooked for his wife and she STILL rolls her eyes at him. What does that even mean? He's daft because he cooked a meal?! Eh?!
The rolling of eyes thing has been going on for decades in all forms of media.
It must be empowering. Not for men obviously but they don't count.

I think I may have just witnessed the worst adverts of the year so far (lets exclude all the charity begging ones).

Just seen the latest advert from Smart Insurance. Its the one with a man and his son watching an old VHS tape of the man when he was his sons age.

There is then the voiceover from the man, which goes something like:-

"Oh I remember back then on holiday, when I was so young. Sadly my dad's just after, but lucky our mum had the money to look after us".

Cut to man hugging his son on sofa, along with the continuing voiceover:-

"Now I'm a parent, I know its MY responsibility to provide for THEIR future."

Man then gets up and walks to the phone (where helpfully there is a leaflet for the insurance company). From this point on it the usual hammy acting, except for one thing, he states his age is 32, when the guy looks to be at least 42, very sick or lives a very hard life.

Either way if its fraud, illness or the ravages of a hard life (plus his own father dying young) I would hate to see what his life insurance premiums would be like.

Also (IIRC) this is not the first time this insurance company has gone for the emotional card. There was one a year or two ago where a young couple walk out to their car and they look next door to see their neighbour being evicted from their home, the script went something like this:-

Man - Hey, is Laura moving house?
Woman - No, remember her husband died a few months back, well he didn't have life insurance and she couldn't keep up with the mortgage payments.
Man - That's awful!
Woman - I'm so glad we sorted out your life insurance, so if anything happens to you, me & the kids will be alright. We don't want to end up like Laura.

In fact I just went to youtube to see if I could find this ad, but couldn't, yet I did find one that is even worse.

Woman in late 30's/early 40's drops her kids off at school, and then is seen going to work in her own flower shop (its always middle class couples in these ads), with (paraphrasing) this voiceover:-

Woman - Hard to think it was only 2 years ago that they lost their father, anyway life goes on! Well it does, doesn't it. Our policy was for £100,000 and we had a mortgage to pay, so I was able to pay off the mortgage. Since then my friends have taken out Smart life insurance, why risk it?

I really hate these blatant emotional adverts, also why is it always the woman who cashes in, never the man?
And why is it always the man's fault when there's no money or he's the one bad at money?
Again this is something that's a trend in all media.
In films if the dead father doesn't get slagged of for being a prick by his family then he's praised but was bad with money and left the family with debts.

The Virgin media ad with Usain Bolt. I dislike all of it -the music, the quick cuts, the arrogance of the man and mostly this idea that Virgin media is super fast and reliable. HA My service with them has been terrible - slow and unreliable and I don't live out in the sticks somewhere.
He always strikes me as someone they wants fame and attention more than anything else and the running is something that's importance is only measured in how it helps him achieves those goals.

I think that is the usual reason for someone to try to achieve the best. They do it for the fame. Nothing wrong in that. It's just that many don't have the personality to cope with it.

If you mean the one with the characters from The Secret Life of Pets, it's actually a great film!
I'm sure it is. However, IMHO it is not a great advert

The funeral plan adverts, all timed for when people in care homes are parked in front of the TV and to remind them that they'll soon be dead.

You never see these adverts after 6pm so are these adverts targeting idiots ? I work from home myself and it amazes me how thick the target audience must be in the day time !!!
As thick as your bosses who pay you to 'work' from home, when you're really watching telly?

Wanting a bit of fame is ok but with Bolt it seems to me that it is more that.
Like that's all he wants

Surely all of us go to work to achieve the important goal of earning money to buy stuff?

Well, if someone offers you sponsorship, would you turn it down? You can't be an athlete for ever. It's no different to being sponsored by a product that isn't advertised on TV, other than we have to suffer the Virgin Media ads.

A fairly new ad that I've seen that is irking me is the new one for MOONPIG, with that blonde 40-something woman who is gushing over Moonpig cards. She says - at the end of the ad, in a really soppy condescending manner - 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUM!!!' And the whole time she is talking, she is constantly SMILING!

ARGH! So annoying!

Haha I agree. I am actually sick of obesity and 'being fat' being celebrated. It's unhealthy, it's unattractive, and it's not cool.

I've quite clearly stated that it's fame I'm talking about and not money.
There is a difference

Dunno if anyone else has mentioned it but that bloody Expedia credit score advert really makes my blood boil.

That stupid bitch who just rubs her smelly feet over his face, "OI! **** off keep sticking your feet in my face!

Then that dog comes along what you doing? "What the bloody hell has it got to do with you, stupid dog!"

Just detest the advert so much.

Some of us have no choice in the matter, I certainly do not feel unattractive thank you very much, I also do not have T2., I am not keen in the advert though as I hate cringy dancing, from any one of any size.

I've started going mad with these adverts. Mad as in insane. I talk to the TV.

I say "But Nick! Where does the dirt go?" before he says "In case you're wondering where the dirt goes" "I was Nick, tell me" "It's compressed into tidy bails" which is my cue for the Tidy Bails song.

But there is a special sadness in my heart, a deep crying for the sheer desolation and loneliness of a man go grey and devoid of human interaction and love that he has to try and train his dog to play swingball with him.
And another thing about those bloody cleaner ads. The 2 types seem to have picked up 2 entirely different kinds of dirt!

The upright picks up fluff and strands which are 'compacted into tidy bales' while the handheld picks up some kind of grit, probably cat litter.

Which just shows how useless the upright would be in picking up anything solid.

And, from my experience with a Dyson, try to overload a handheld with fluff and strands and you'll spend ages digging out with a bloody stick.

Tell me about it, I'm still waiting for the "free" broadband speed increase I was originally supposed to get last November but wont be getting now until next year sometime.

I won't even mention the fact that you have picked PURELY on my comments, and not said ANYTHING about the poster's comments who I was replying to, because I am sure you have your reasons for picking on me alone.

And you go on merrily endorsing and supporting obesity, claiming 'big is beautiful,' and that there is no harm whatsoever in carrying around extra stones of excess fat on your body and around your heart, liver, kidneys and lungs, and accuse anyone who thinks it's unattractive and unhealthy of 'body shaming. '

Meanwhile *I* will continue to look after myself, eat healthily, exercise regularly, and stay slim, so I don't need to make excuses for being obese, and blame anything but my overeating and laziness.

'Body shaming' is merely a phrase used by the most ardent feminists to attack anyone who thinks being obese is unnecessary and unattractive. Which it is.

People are entitled to their own opinions. Sorry if that offends you little snowflakes.

Great post Jane. I too am overweight but am actually trying to do something about it rather than blaming the 2 G's (genes and glands). And how come nobody mentions the body shaming of slim women by larger ones....as though "real women" can't be slim??
