Back in late 1999 Channel 4 wanted to make a special programme celebrating the 'Top 100 TV adverts of the 20th Century'. So Channel 4 commissioned a poll of some of the top UK ad men (executives, directors, writers, song/jingle writers ect) that would be used to come up with the collective Top 100 Uk ads of all time.
The next step was to take this list of Top 100 ads and let the British Public vote for the most popular. In effect the Ad mens top 100 ads, but ranked by the public.
At this point Channel 4 got a sponsorship deal for the show with The Times newspaper, so Channel 4 ran the online poll on its website and The Times printed off a 'voting slip' and enclosed it with an edition of the Sunday Time.
Come January 2000 the poll closes and Channel 4 starts to edit the show together (in the order that the public has voted). Here is the publics top 5:-
5th - Boddingtons (Melanie Sykes Ice Cream truck) - first aired July 1997
4th - Electric Central Heating (Creature Comforts ad) - aired 1988-1991 approx
3rd - Tango (Slappy Orange Man) - first aired 1992
2nd - Cadbury's Smash (The Smash Martians) - first aired 1973
1st - Guinness (Horses & Surfers) - first aired in May 1999
Therefore the greatest advert, as voted by the British Public (voting was between November 1999 & January 2000) was one that was aired within the last 6 months.
Now the Guinness 'Horses & Surfers' advert is a very good ad, but was it (even at the time) the best UK advert of all time.Personally I would say no and I'm sure the only reason it won the popular vote was because the advert was fresh in people mind.
I'm willing to bet that if the show was being made today then the great British public would vote that bloody Meerkat for Compare the Market as number 1 advert of all time.
I'm sure most people will be aware of the old Creature Comforts Electricity ads, the old 'You Know when you've been Tango'd' adverts and the old 'For Mash Get Smash' ads.
But how many of you can truely remember (without looking up on youtube first) the Mel Sykes Ice-Cream truck ad for Boddington's or the 'Horses & Surfers' ad for Guinness?
