I recall the memorable and very atmospheric cigarette advert 'You're never alone with a Strand'. It had the actor Terence Brook walking through the empty streets at night, looking lonely and brooding, lighting up a fag, all shot in black and white. By all accounts the sales of Strand took a nose dive because smokers didn't want to be seen as sad loners! Nevertheless, it was a great ad!

Even though the Strand cigerette ad killed off the Strand brand, the music used in the background was very popular and the songwriter (Cliff Adams) created a 3 minute version to be released as a single.
Cliff went on to be Britain's foremost jingle writer and advert song writer, coming up with the following:-
The Milk Tray theme tune
The Frys Turkish Delight song
For Mash get Smash jingle
Murray Mints, too good to hurry jingle
Plus many, many more over the years.
However his most famous one may just be the Milky Bar Kid song, which in later years Adams would joke that he could retire off the royalty payments from this tune alone, given how often and for how many years the campaign ran.
Also another interesting side note about the failed Strand brand of cigarettes. The biggest problem was the tag line 'You're
never alone with a Strand', however market research at the time found that most people remembered the tag as 'You're
always alone with a Strand'.
After 3-4 years the brand was killed off and rebranded as Embassy. In the first Embassy advert there was a lonely man at a party who was being ignored, so he starts to hand out Embassy cigarettes and lo and behold he is suddenly the most popular person at the party. Thus Embassy went on to become the biggest selling cigarette brand of the 1960's.
