After some time away from the forum I stupidly clicked on the heading "spoilers and information" expecting, erm, spoilers and information. No chance, Same old forum.

If there were any spoilers and information they would be discussed.

No doubt that Danny was there to serve the Doctor's and Clara's characters, but I don't think that's such a bad thing. I would say he was mainly an extension of the "soldier" theme of Series 8 in exploring the Doctor's hypocritical aversion to such a position, so he tied into the bigger picture well enough. You could see that he was suffering because of what he'd done in war, much like the Doctor, and it came across as very real to me. I can't say I've been a soldier myself, but my grandfather had PTSD from his experiences and it seemed accurately portrayed.

I did appreciate the closure they gave his character in Death in Heaven, with him throwing away his chance of resurrection so he could give the child whose life he'd accidentally taken a second chance. It was a very bittersweet, fairy tale-esque point typical of Moffat, but it was a great and fitting way to end the character's story.

As for the Doctor's dislike of him, I never felt like that extended to me, as he wasn't really the point of view character. It was Clara through whose eyes we saw most of the story unfold, which put things into context as seeing two characters she liked in conflict. Clara herself saw a lot of the Doctor in Danny, I believe, further drawing those similarities between the two.

I'm not saying Danny was an amazing character and should have reaped in the rewards... sometimes things got a little shakey with him; but I thought he was likable enough and helped flesh out the sort of story Series 8 wanted to tell about guilt, grief, etc.

Always more to see, for those willing to go and look.

For example, Ralf Little is in the cast - with interesting character names.

Not playing her SJA character though by the looks of it.

Nope, but it's interesting that they've got her for the show. I wonder if they've started worked on Frank Cottrell-Boyce's episode yet. They must be finished filming episode 1 by now, right?

You mean Marlene husband from only fools and horses has written an episode?

Ralph Little's turned out quite nice looking hasn't he?

Their names sound a bit like nicknames you'd get on (for example) a ship/spaceship. I assume they're a crew of some sort?

Not sure if it's relevant but Sophie Austin (she played serial killer Lindsey Butterfield on Hollyoaks and was killed off earlier this year) has teased that she was filming in Cardiff on Twitter for a BBC Drama Production - either Casualty or Doctor Who maybe?

Saw The Wright Stuff earlier this morning. It had Brian Blessed on as a guest and he said he's had to turn down a couple of offers from Doctor Who because he can't look Peter Capaldi in the face.

It turns out that Brian had hit him accidentally on the set of Tom Jones (costume drama, not the singer) and knocked him out!

I wonder who Brian would have played...possibly the role Greg Davis played in the last Christmas special.

Well we've had Trigger in it, so it's the next logical step...

My hopes of Peri and King Yrcanos returning to the TV show ended when Big Finish beat them to it! So I am guessing he's been offered new roles rather than bringing back Yrcanos. The Greg Davis role makes sense, although I can't help but think it would have ended up being very Yrcanos-like if Brian had played it.

I think the plan was to get BRIAN BLESSED to do a cameo as 'Odin' in The Girl Who Died, but he wasn't well at the time. Thankfully BRIAN seems to be in fine fettle again now, BLESS him.

If Brian Blessed ever appears in Doctor Who again, I bet the publicity would be just about vague enough to leave fans wondering if he's coming back as King Yrcanos.

I remember when Anne Reid popped up as a vampire in Smith and Jones, and I spent the whole episode wondering if they were going to link her to the character she played in The Curse of Fenric, Nurse Crane, who was killed by vampires. It would have been pretty neat to see that link between the two although I accept the S&J vampire was an alien whilst the Fenric human vampires were from the future.

His past involvements include Eastenders, Skins and Cucumber. I hope that's not a reflection of Chibnall's direction. He was producer of An Adventure in Time and Space though, which was great.

It's Executive Producer, which only entails so much creative control and is sometimes a slightly vague position, so you can't really judge it much based on past credits (Brian Minchin worked on some rubbish, after all). These shows were, at least, promoted well enough, not sure how much of that is owed to Strevens. I'm just concerned about the show conforming to certain tropes a little and losing its unique flair.

It's worth noting that the new Star Trek TV series is on Netflix from January next year.

I don't know what the new show is about, but its the first time since the late eighties that a Star Trek series has been in production at same time as Doctor Who.

You could argue they clashed in 1996 and by a couple of months in 2005, but that's all.

I'm a bit of a Trekkie on the side and although I'm really glad there's a new TV show, I am a bit worried it might steal Doctor Who's thunder when it returns a few months later.

Well, am assuming it wont be shown on any 'major' channels in the UK (?) so not bothered, really. * Grew up with the original series on BBC1 during the seventies (still hugely fond of it), and whilst I liked a bit of TNG back in the day, I assume the ratings weren't that big on BBC2. And cos I didn't have Sky then, only saw the really rather good DS9 by borrowing my mate's Videos! The other series left me cold, tbh. Blandy bland bland.

TNG often was too, I personally think. It's just they'd occasionally pull off something pretty brilliant which kept me watching. Earliest examples I remember; 'Conspiracy' from S1 and 'Measure of a Man' from S2. The latter in particular is one of my favourite 'genre' episodes of any show.

*Have no idea what sort of ratings 'Netflix' series get, tbh. Way too C21 for me.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Netflix ever releases its viewing figures (and isn't obliged to either).

I can't see it being a problem. It wasn't before and if anything, having two competitive shows just strengthens both of them because it widens the fanbase by presenting more options to introduce people into the genre (i.e. Marvel and DC). I can't see them competing anyway, they're not all that similar and often appeal to different audiences.

It probably won't. There will be a lot of publicity for the first episode then soon after interest in the series will diminish. I don't see how it can have a negative impact on Doctor Who since it won't air at the same time as Star Trek. What might steal Doctor Who's thunder in my opinion is the lack of advertising and publicity to casual viewers (some people thought there was lack of advertising and publicity for the start of series 9, however that was a different situation because of the new companion).

I'm looking forward to both.

As the new Star Trek series will be on Netflix in the UK I don't see it as a problem for Doctor Who.. Netflix doesn't (yet) have the reach that traditional broadcasters have. There's a reason Netflix doesn't publish audience figures.

Even if it was on another traditional TV channel at the same time it wouldn't matter.

We did get something of a small insight earlier this year. Netflix reported that Orange is the New Black is their most watched series, followed later by:

Nielsen said 6.7 million people watched the fourth season premiere of OITNB between June 17 (the first day it was available to stream) and June 19, while 5.9 million people watched the show’s second episode during that same period.
