I can't stress enough the sheer discrepancy between the total wreck who shuffled on stage on the arm of a roadie and the voice which came out in the performance, as strong - he always had a powerful voice - as it was 50 years ago when I first came across him.
And there was none of this playing slow soppy ballads cos he was getting on - all the old favourites (including Good Morning Little Schoolgirl which sounded a little odd on context and given recent court cases a tad uncomfortable, though I'm not suggesting anything bent about Winter.)
One of my favourites is Still Alive And Well from the album of that name, though sadly no longer true. The line 'Everyone I thought was cool is six foot underground' still cracks me up, as does, from Ain't Nothing To me about the singer advising a guy not to chat up a certain girl in a bar, the line 'Ah well, that's life - or at least it was.' I've always like wit in songs. Prince has - had - plenty of witty lines which make you laugh out loud but seem to go under the radar.
