There is to be a new celebrity cycling show to start on Channel 5 based on the Tour de France.

Anyone watching?

Far better than I expected for a C5 show. No offence C5.

I thought it was going to be celebs larking about but it looks very serious.

I'm watching as a fan of cycling rather than of these kind of shows

But it's really good.

Obviously watching the Tour and other big cycle races it's difficult to appreciate just how good the Pros are........this puts it into some kind of context

maybe also explains why they need all those drugs.......

Yeah, sadly that's pretty much it.

Enjoyable show. I'll be tuning in for the rest.

I think Lucy shows the problem with casting reality stars. I find it hard to avoid the suspicion that she's dramatising for the cameras. The producers seem to like it; she'll probably get a lot of screen time; but I'll always have the nagging suspicion that it's just a little bit fake. (Louie is going to be a bit of a pain that way too.)

The other thing I don't like is that they don't indicate often enough who these people are. I still can't match all of them with their names. I know it can annoy some viewers if names keep appearing on the screen, but I'd find it helpful. (The C5 web site lacks a good "who they are" section too.)

Apart from that -- good show, interesting, and I want to see how things develop. I'll try to keep watching (if I can remember when it's on.)

I thought it was quite good too, too many tears though! Love Austin since strictly so thrilled he is in this! Hubby and I watch the tdf every year and the pro cyclists make it look effortless, good to see how non pros get on.

Watching this made me realise that what I'd really like to see is a fly on the wall documentary about lower level aspiring young pros and their life trying to make it.

A cycling fanatic at my gym knows the Yates family and from cycling holidays in Spain where the boys train, tells some really interesting facts about their lives as pro cyclists very much on their way up. I knew that this programme would not be anything like what the twins (Simon and Adam) do but it made me realise what I wish I were watching.

This was okay but is a reality TV show with the emphasis on drama (whether real, perceived or otherwise) accompanied by appropriate music and script constantly mapping out potential problems and making the most of real ones.

How on earth will Jodie Kidd be able to do the Etap with a torn ligament? But she tells us that she is going top do 'everything she can' to still do it.

I not sure I buy it. Maybe she'll have to pull out so I'll reserve further judgement but if she ends up doing the Etap, it will make me think that she never had a tear in the first place.

On the question about team building, instead of showing us a Tough Mudder event, how about showing us how the riders were / are trained to ride in a group with rotating leader? Not good enough or interesting enough TV?

All a bit predictable really with surprise, surprise, the ex pros getting competitive and the non sports people going on their 'journeys' as much figuratively than literally.

To make matters worst, I texted BIKE to whatever number they gave in the outside (very, very outside) chance of winning £5k

It was ok but Anjelica and Lucy bursting into tears every five minutes just made me want to tell them to grow up!

Also, thinking about it I also have an issue with the type of cleats they were using. For beginners they'd have been much better with the Shimano clickr cleats/fastenings which release much more easily rather than the Garmin professional ones they had.

With the Shimano cleats it's almost impossible to fall over as they were shown doing since your instinctive reaction as you lose your balance to pull your foot up will release the cleat.

Found this review, which usefully covers this:

The names trip vaguely off the tongue: from the sporting world we have former cricketer Darren Gough, winter Olympics star Amy Williams and rugby-playing man Austin Healey. From the murky underworld of reality TV we have TOWIE's Lucy Mecklenburgh and Hugo Taylor from Made in Chelsea, then there's West End dancer Louie Spence, model Jodie Kidd, and Angellica Bell who might be a TV presenter.

As a fairly experienced road cyclist, I was a bit annoyed with the enforced 'clipping in'. It's perfectly fine to ride in trainers and flat pedals while you get used to steering, braking and changing gear - I did for six months, and it never held me back when climbing. (Descending is a different matter, once you're fast enough for it to matter, which they won't be yet.)

Well, that wasn't as bad as last week.

Lucy's moaning is beginning to annoy me. I'm suspecting that fall was engineered.

The group riding that Clancy was explaining wasn't the simplest for newbies. I've never actually done it that way, as few roads are wide enough for both riders to pull off to different sides. Moving in a loop ("chaingang") is much easier.

I ride the Surrey Hills most weeks but I only hit Box once or twice a year - it's not difficult at all and there are much better climbs in the area.

Someone should've been following Lucy down Box to give her advice to correct her technique - both of the coaches were in front and unable to see where she was going wrong. Getting into the drops would've helped for a start.

Barhatch is a sod, and not one for newbies. However, it's probably worse than what's on the Etape.

I've actually made a note of that pub as it looked interesting and I've never stopped there before, despite passing it a few times.

I hope she and the rest all do the Etap and do well.

I am still a weeny bit suspicious of them saying last week that Jodie had a torn ligament. I doubt she could have ever recovered that quickly from even a small tear.

A strain may be but a tear?

Anyway, she's back.

As with any sport, even at decent recreational level, let alone more committed amateur, semi-pro or the whole hog at pro level, getting through is about many things and mental skills including perseverance are often as important as anything, including the fitness, the skills and any tactics.

With Lucy, although her early falls cannot be denied or ignored, she seems to be talking herself out of the whole thing and not into it.

She seems completely lacking in another key mental skill which is confidence and / or belief that she can and / or will get the job done.

Not unsurprisingly, this situation is sending her into a negative cycle (pardon the pun) in relation to the fundamental question which is, does she want to do it or not?

If she answers yes, she will as she can clearly ride in a basic way and not at all badly either. If she answers no, then she'll create the argument to stop for good.

Louis is great but looks like his body is failing him.

Get the feeling with Hugo, who can also ride quite well, if not quick enough, that he is still very committed to the hard work of his life-style and not the sweat and grind and jelly legs of hard cycling.

I'd love to spend my next birthday doing the Surrey Hills ride but Hugo was not keen at all.

Your son will probably admit how addictive it is too. It's never too late to begin - there's loads of different level rides that go out all over the country.
The most difficult thing is not the cycling, it's knowing what to wear to be comfortable over longer distances/different weather conditions, and making sure your bike fits as well as it can. I had two guys leave my ride early yesterday as they weren't wearing the right clothes (the secret in this weather is layers, layers, layers).

To be fair, the weather was a bit pants on that day. (I'd be interested in finding out what kit they were wearing.)

But you're right, he needs a dose of MTFU/MUFFS.

Does anyone else think it's telling that the two biggest whingers are the two from 'reality TV'?

Maybe they were picked for exactly those reasons?

Looks like they've got pretty good bikes (saw a Boardman logo flash by) and kit as well as all that pro support with the coaches but the support cars etc too.

The MTFU thing is an interesting one.

Whilst I was no Darren Gough, when I played decent club cricket in Middlesex back in the late 70's, I can think of a few examples personally, especially when about to face fast bowing (in days before helmets) when I could have been given a does of it / given myself a dose of it.

Whilst being hit and hurt was always my biggest fear (and one felt by almost everyone who faced / faces quick bowling, apparently and not surprisingly), I was never hit and could actually deal with it reasonably well.

But rather like Lucy and to a degree, Hugo, my own demons got the worse of me. Whilst I was fortunate / lucky enough to have had some really good experiences to look back on, programmes like this do make my own bad times re-surface and I cringe when remembering them

Oh, to have the time again!!!!

The white/black bikes most of the women are on are Condor Baracchis.
Healey's riding a Giant (TCR?) and Gough's on a Genesis (Volare?).

I've said this before but I'm not convinced by the coaching. Elite/experienced cyclists often forget the difficulties they had learning, and neither Hayles nor Storey is a qualified cycling coach. They needed someone like Huw Williams to break it down.

Would love to have a support car on my rides. I've only ever once taken the train home, and that's because I had a mechanical.

I suspect Gough's funny moment could have been partly due to over-consumption of gels. On rides like that, you have to keep consuming solid food, otherwise it's easy to feel sick as your body stops digesting food.

Indeed.

Or maybe the over consumption was of another type of beverage the evening before?

PS You are spot on about the coaching. I was a full time tennis coach for 14 years and had loads of coaching given to me in cricket and football (as a kid) as well as tennis (mainly as an adult). It's no surprise that often the top performers haven't got a clue how to coach - they just executed and did so brilliantly.

In the tennis thread, I've talked many times about a Fantasy Camp I went on as my annual holiday through the 90's. Attending and a central part of the week were many of the tennis greats of the late 60's and 70's.

Of them all, Roy Emerson (a double Wimbledon Champ and multi Grand Slam winner in his day) was the only one who was really able to translate coaching ideas and tips to the level of the guys at the camp.

He was often referred to by many there over the years as an excellent teacher.

Roy knew how to switch on many lights in your brain as to what you had to do and how to do it.

I tried to adopt the same approach when I became a coach.
