Can anyone help me with a problem I have started to notice. I have the LG 55UB820V model and while my girlfriend was watching The Voice a few weeks ago I noticed a strange problem. Before someone started signing they do a 2/3 minute video talking about their back story ect, now when ever the scene fades to black I noticed loads of horizontal lines across the middle of the screen. This happened every time it faded to black.

Now I thought it maybe down to The Voice yet last night the very same problem happened while Britain's Got Talent was on. Same problem, doing a quick back story on someone, screen fades to black and the lines appear. It only ever happens when the screen fades to black, when it is back up, the lines go.

I have just gone past my 1 years warranty as well, by 2 weeks. So I hope this is not a major problem.

I'm not sure what the idea of watching the Voice clip at 5:10 was; I think most of us here understand the concept of the screen fading to black and it's not as if we're going to see the same issue because none of us are watching it on your (possibly) faulty TV.

Long story short I think this sounds like a panel issue. My guess is that there's some issue with the contacts that drive the pixels in that particular area of the screen and they're failing to close down the LCD to block the back-light and generate a black. If that is the case then the outlook isn't good. These things don't fix themselves. This issue is only likely to either remain or (more likely) get worse.

Given that the TV is only just outside of warranty then there's a reasonable chance that the manufacturer might look on the case sympathetically. Your first port of call though is the dealer. Your contract is with them and not the manufacturer, so it's up to them to approach LG's service support team and see what can be done to help you. Act now! Ring them today and get the ball rolling. Don't take no for an answer.

Agree that it does not look good for the TV as I also have a lot of banding as well. I know banding on a LED TV is normal but watching say Match of the Day is pretty much unwatchable. When the camera pans from left to right I see faint lines across most of the screen.

With regards to who I call, I got the TV on finance from Currys. Was due to pay the whole amount after 6 months as was due a promotion at work but it went the complete opposite and was made redundant. So that is my main worry that I am paying X amount for 3 years for a TV that seems knackered. Do I phone Curry's or the finance people?

Your sales contract is with Currys. They're your first port of call. Ring Currys.

You also have some additional rights (and obligations) if you purchased using a credit agreement. It can be argued that had credit not been available at the time then you might not have made the purchase as it may have been unaffordable to you as a cash buy. In that respect then the credit firm also has a liability with regard to the sale.

Check online; there's plenty of legal advice sites which will help shine a light on your rights. In the meantime though take action now. Ring Currys. Explain the situation. See what their response is and go from there. They may surprise you by taking up the matter and offering a solution without any drama.

Sale of goods act, or what it's been replaces with gives you 6 years protection, not guarantee, so prorata you may get 5/6 refund. EU rules give you a 2 year guarantee. UK dealers try to say it does not apply here. Rubbish, we are in the EU at the moment.

It doesn't and you have been told many times that the EU ruling doesn't apply here in the UK. We have the Consumer Rights act.

Wasting your time arguing with Winston. I have posted links to the actual directive many times to prove that it is not a 2 year guarantee but he hasn't bothered to read it yet obviously.

Actually some parts of the EU directive were incorporated into what was the Sale of Goods Act at the time. But as most of the EU directive almost exactly mirrored SoGA you'd be forgiven for not noticing the differences

Just a quick update, I phoned up Curry's who just get fobbing me off saying it has nothing to do with them as the 12 month warranty was with LG so I had to get in contact with them. They were literally no help what so ever.

So I will supply them with a video of it happening over the weekend and get back to them. Hopefully they will then suggest for a repair guy to come out to look at it.

If the fix from LG doesn't work and assuming it is new, you have a 12 month warranty with Curry's under the sale of goods act not LG. Demand to see the manager, not one of his monkeys and say you will sue via the Small Claims Court if he breaks the law and ensure the story goes to the press as well. Many newspapers have departments who love stories like this and are all too willing to help if they can print it. Contact Curry's customer services with a formal complaint, in writing, as well if the manager is awkward. Send the letter by recorded delivery as you may need to take legal action. Even if the fix works make a complaint to Curry's services about the staff at that branch.

Why anyone uses Curry's, especially readers of this forum, is beyond me.

If you feel like wasting even more time you might try complaining to someone further up the Currys food chain about their response. The law states that it is the retailer not the manufacturer who is primarily responsible for fixing faults. They cannot simply say "not our problem mate".

The manufacturers guarantee/warranty is an addition to your legal rights not a substitute. Currys simply cannot use the guarantee as a get out clause for their obligations under the law. Though I am not in the least bit surprised you got the response you did from them.

Currys are fobbing you off with nonsense. They sold it to you, it's their problem, the law's on your side!! It's supposed to be "fit for the purpose" for much more than a year (anyone confirm?) allowing for wear and tear, and the problem seems internal.

The Comsumer Rights Act gives you 6 years protection, not. guarantee. As usual Currys are trying it on. Also EU rules do give you a two year guarantee, the U.K. cannot just opt out as some posters keep saying. There have been cases where retailers were forced to comply, believe it was Tescos.

How many times do you need to be told that there is no such thing as a EU mandated 2 year guarantee? Just for once read the actual EU directive rather than the websites you normally quote and then come back and tell us where it says anything about this guarantee. I have read it forwards, backwards, inside out and upside down and I'm stuffed if I can find any mention of a mandatory 2 year guarantee.

As we keep telling him, there is no 2 year EU warranty, merely an inferior 2 year version of the UK 6 year system, which was why we opted out.

You never know. One day I may win the Lottery Jackpot and one day Winston might actually read the directive and admit there is no such thing as a 2 year EU warranty. I suspect the former is more likely than the latter however

If its of any help, I work for AEG, Electrolux and Zanussi products under warranty - our procedure for customer slightly outside of warranty is to ask them to call the manufacturer directly, who then make a decision as to what happens. Sometimes they pay for the whole repair, sometimes parts only or a percentage towards the total cost.

So on that basis, I would say you've done the right thing by going to LG directly.
