Someone high up had made a catastrophic error, several, in fact. The allocation of tickets was badly misjudged, then there were hold ups on the M62 because both sets of fans had to travel that way (shouldn't have been held at Sheffield's ground), but the police wouldn't make the decision to delay the kick off. But then even worse, they tried to cover it up. Police notebooks were actually altered, ambulances were stopped by the police from entering the ground. Fans eventually started to rip up the advertising hoardings to use as stretchers, and I'm sure lives could have been saved. The police panicked, pure and simple, they didn't know what to do, and further errors were made.
But then, The Sun, fed information by the police I might add, printed those appalling headlines and stories. That was when a large majority of the population lost interest, it was the fans own fault, end of story. Those senior police officers, and most of the constables and the rest who lied and doctored their notebooks have been sitting pretty for the last God knows how long, after being allowed to retire on nice fat pensions. They should, in my opinion, forfeit their pension for such gross misconduct and criminal actions in some cases. Thank God justice prevailed, but why the hell it took 27 years is beyond me. May they all now Rest In Peace
Yes they were unlawfully killed, as an order was given to open the gates and let thousands of fans into an already overcrowded pen with a huge barbed wire fence at the end. While it may not have been deliberate, it was certainly foreseeable, and the police were therefore negligent.
And on the matter of compensation, a high number of police officers, ambulance personal, emergency workers etc have already received large payouts after suing their employers for stress, trauma etc, as it happened in the course of their duty. Most of these were all done and dusted within a few years of the incident.
Yes there should be prosecutions, there were high ranking police officers who were negligent, in dereliction of their duty, and don't get me started on the lies and cover ups.”
Why would we travel up from Nottingham on the M62? M1 North - Hillsborough is pretty much equidistant between the two, isn't it?
Or am I missing something?
