After thirty years official government and cabinet paperwork is put into the public domain. This includes minutes of cabinet meetings and briefings. Not everything gets released and the usual reason is national security or breaking the OSA.
If everything is released a out Hillsborough and the government's thinking at the time I will be amazed.

Burnham certainly implied that there had been plenty of meetings and much discussion at Westminster by various parties in his speech. I rather think if May is still in her current role she would be more inclined than most to go for full transparency on this issue.

They are currently releasing two years worth of cabinet documents every year - because the 30 year rule is becoming the 20 year rule.

They released 1988 a few months ago, so the documents should be released later this year.

The ones for the Bradford City fire provided interesting reading - Home Secretary Leon Brittan* promising fences will be safe, and everyone's favourite apologiser Bernard Ingham proposing an anti hooliganism project involving goalkeepers and pop stars such as Elton John - 'Goalies against Hoolies'. http://www.theguardian.com/football/...aret-thatcher-

*edit, he actually said it in parliament - 'there is no question of putting up a fence that would create a trap.'

Thanks Fizz for telling me that. Is news to me.

It isn't but then isn't that what SYP did.

I think you stated or implied in one of your post that possibly one of the reasons for inaction by the police on the day was because most saw the fans as hooligans, isn't that vilifying, isn't that open season?

“As for the retired officers, my reading was that it was more general, and that they should be proud of the service they gave.”

He was wrong to generalise, he should have stated, unequivocally what he meant and he didn't, you can't say something for the boys in a roundabout way.

Nonetheless he is right, there were than and now many hard working, decent committed police officers within SYP.
Quote:
“ There were individuals at Hillsborough that did a good job too. Even some of the victims have acknowledged that. The blame should be shouldered by those concerned, not everyone.”

There were indeed and no doubt some who have never got recognition.

Why? when praise is given to a force, shouldn't that be shouldered by everyone?
Quote:
“This is an example of how it is a free for all now. People defending themselves in general terms were silenced.”

The same as that perpetrated or attempted with the victims and their families---and some police officers.

You have pointed out and you are right to so, as are others, there are two aspects to this tragedy, what led up to it and immediately afterwards and then the lies ,deceit ,slurs that followed.

For myself, I am focused on the 27 years of the aftermath.

Having said that, I am of the belief while the victims and their families will always have my full support and they deserve their day in court and the prosecutions to follow, in this instance it is not for them and their supporters to demand the SYP to be disbanded or special measure teams to be brought in.

It maybe required but that is for others to consider and act on.

The SYP of today is a different beast of yesterday year, I don't have an issue with some current heads rolling and deservedly so but as the victim's families seek truth and justice the local SYP bobby of today also deserve justice, they too have been let down.

I see.thanks, yes that will be interesting. I thought everything related to Hillsborough was waved under the 30yr rule and released to the HIP but your probably right ,there must be more.

I was hoping they would show Jimmy McGovern's Hillsborough again, one of the best tv programmes ever made in my opinion. Definitely worth a watch on Sunday.

"Shamefully, the cover-up continued in this Warrington court room. Millions of pounds of public money were spent retelling discredited lies.

,And you dismiss it as "something that would not otherwise have attracted that punishment." I make no comment, people can make up their own minds about your views.

This afternoon a retired South Yorkshire cop has crawled out of the woodwork to repeat the same old story. and you condemn people for tarring all police with the same brush.”

I've said my views, and you ignore them, whilst still trying to twist what I'm saying.

I can understand those who were there, and did their duty defending themselves.

Not every member of that force acted in a criminal way, but that is the perception now, and anyone tries to suggest otherwise is accused of supporting those that did wrong.

It's possible to acknowledge all sides, good and bad.

The cover up lasted less than a week.

It has been common knowledge for 27 years that the Police messed up.

That is utter rubbish. The editing of the witness statements hadn't even really commenced after one week. The cover up by the police was still on-going during the inquest.

Even by your standards that is a pathetic comment.

Less of the insults please. The truth came out well before the Taylor report in 1989.

Back then, the Police had to concede that they opened the gates and they did not seal off the tunnel.

Why are you continuing to stamp on the grave of the dead? Would you say that to a member of the families who have had to bear so many lies and smears over the decades? Look them in the eye and tell them that the truth was known and that the cover up lasted but a week? You told another poster less of the insults. Well I respectfully request that you stop insulting the dead.

My last post on this thread.

They were forced to concede that element publicly, but privately that did not end their cover up at all, as I said the witness statements were nobbled among other things, and it has been on-going to this day. To suggest the 'cover up lasted less than a week' is, as you well know, totally untrue.

The whole reason you still get people making comments about thousands of Liverpool fans turning up without tickets and forcing the gates in is due to the prolonged smear campaign they launched.

I will reply to you before I leave the thread. My use of the words 'cover up' were wrong.

What I meant was that the accounts published in the Sun were quickly discredited. I accept that the Police continued to make excuse but I was always of the opinion that almost all of the truth was in the Taylor report of 1989.

I was replying to a poster who was saying their feelings were the same as another poster's feelings.

Why can none of the naysayers post something to refute the findings of the jury?

Because it's all just innuendo and 'feelings' and pointless posting unless of course your aim is to elicit a reaction.

It's as credible as CT nonsense.

Okay, fair enough, but I disagree that the reports were quickly discredited though, the myth has endured to this day and is deeply ingrained in the minds of some people.

And yes, Taylor on the whole did a good job of seeing through the lies he was fed, but nonetheless the fabrication of the evidence he considered elements of the case on mean it is still, in retrospect, a flawed report.
