Hello there..

Are you guilty of over-thinking when watching Doctor Who rather than just sitting back and enjoying the show... Well this is the thread for you...

All those How come, Why is it, What would, Why doesn't questions that can arise from watching Doctor Who can be spelled out here... They can be serious or non-serious ponderings, whatever mood your thoughts take you...


Some offerings...

- How come The Doctor with all his cleverness and advance technology as never given himself and whomever he's travelling with the ability to communicate when separated... like some advance phone chip inside their head where they just have to think about calling the other and it opens up communication between them, they just talk and the other hears them in their head, or even just simple communications like we see in Star Trek or heck or own phones... It would solve many problems when things go bad and they get separated or a companion gets lost/kidnapped by evil person(s)...

- How is it that they never get attacked by alien lions, we've seen that The Doctor and Co materialise in Jungles/forests on alien worlds and yet they wonder through them without incident or worry that something might jump out and kill them, its only when they reach some intelligent beings/humans/robots does the problem/trouble of the story start... If I was plonked in the amazon jungle in just my normal clothes with no knowledge or some guns I wouldn't be wondering about exploring without much care for my safety, I'd be as white as a ghost thinking yep I'm going to get eaten alive.. They never seem worried in DW about any potential alien wild life waiting to pounce on their next meal..

- What would the Daleks actually do if they achieved their goal of destroying all other life, they don't do anything besides trying to destroy other life, they don't dance, listen to music, play games, take walks in the park, shop, enjoy stories, have long soaks in the bath, talk about their feelings and opinions, what do they do other than work towards killing people, once that mission is fully achieved their entire motivation of being is gone... Perhaps they ignore this fundamental flaw, they hate all other life but its only other life that gives them meaning/purpose.

- Why doesn't The Doctor stop disasters like the Titanic on Earth, he would save ships in the future that are on a collision course with some disaster (like 42) so what's the difference, he seems very picky/inconsistent in what he can and can't do when stepping in to help... If its an event we the audience knows happens in our history he can't interfere for some reason (a case of fixed point of wave the problem away convenience) yet if the same problem happens on another planet, in space or in the future then you bet he will interfere and stop it.

I know it's not quite what you meant, but Series 9 came close to this

-How come there's no Time Lords around because of the Time War, even though they're time travellers so they should be all over the shop?
-How come the Daleks don't just straight up kill the Doctor whenever they spot him instead of explaining their elaborate plans so he can foil them?
-Why are his clothes always on-point when he rarely ever changes?
-What happened to Bessie?
-Why doesn't the Doctor go around giving everybody spoilers for their favourite shows, just for fun?
-How come Jackie didn't put Rose up for adoption?
-How come the Doctor isn't traumatised over Love and Monsters actually being a thing?

- How come everywhere they go humans are there, is the universe very small, or are there not that many habitable worlds and Humans have spread out to an eye popping degree...Or perhaps the Doctor is limited to where he an go...Think about it if an alien being showed up on our planet it would be a big deal and cause a lot of commotion..

The Doctor is limited to only going to planets that has either a Human population or planets where the aliens there are aware of Humans or forms like it, it would be necessary in-order for the Doctor and companion to be there without causing a massive incident...

If they just randomly show up on a planet that has no contact with other life forms before they could cause a massive incident, and risk being taken and experimented on and cut open and all that.. now that's worst case scenario, they might actually come across friendly nice aliens who just ask the Doctor and companion lots of questions and invite them on their chat shows...

But the point is the Doctor would have to be very careful as to where he goes as it could be incredible dangerous and potentially damaging to the societies he comes across, so perhaps it makes sense that a lot of the places he goes have humans there.. The Doctor is staying within boundaries, where he knows human form can show up without disaster...

How come so many highly motivated aliens, soldiers and assorted nasties, assumingly well trained, often turn out to be such rotten shots? (Don't get me started on the Federation thugs in Blakes 7, either. Most of them are totally incompetent, the behelmeted buffoons. Usually a complete Barn Door scenario with that lot. No wonder Servalan was peed off most of the time.)

- How come the Time Lords the race that built Tardis's are still playing soldiers... They have people in not very good armour with a gun that shoots a laser... The Time Lords...a incredibly advance race... that's their defence, that's their weapons that's their soldiers... the people who have mastered time and space.. need guys with simple guns... really... surely its like modern America fighting with a stick they found off the floor... shouldn't the Time Lords be far beyond soldiers with guns as we know it...

- Why is it that Time Lords just stay on Gallifrey, they have mastered time and space, all those wonders they could go out and see/experience, maybe have a holiday on some tropical moon and then another on a planet with amazing landscapes, and yet they all (bar the renegades) seem to just hang out on Gallifrey, the same old orange planet, why... In fact why didn't they ever expand to other planets, their entire empire/society seems limited to one planet. It be like if early Humans just stayed in Africa and never expanded out...

When The Doctor regenerates, if his feet grow bigger compared to his last body how does his feet then fit inside the shoes... or does it just cause an explosion the size of Belgium...

Well, not just that, I'm sure I'd do some more sensible / clever stuff too...

Back on topic...

Why does the Master always have about 3 million back up plans? None of which ever work anyway. It's as if he just knows his plans are crap / stupid / doomed to fail and he's just doing all this evil genius stuff for a laugh.

I mean just look at Logopolis / Castrovalva. He materialises around the Doctor's TARDIS in order to piggyback a ride to Logopolis, but ends up travelling there on his own anyway. Then he kills a bunch of Action Men which has the effect of causing entropy to eat up half the known Universe (something which the Master seems not have actually wanted / planned anyway). Then he decides to hold the rest of the Universe to ransom with a smallish power cable and a big radio telescope. The Doctor unplugs the cable and saves the whole Universe as a result, but falls to his 4th death. But what does the Master do? Plug the cable back in? Nope, he utterly forgets that plan and kidnaps Adric so he can make Adric play Sims with him and create a whole community and people and history and everything, called Castrovalva.
Yet at the same time the Master sends the TARDIS back to the creation of the Universe, which is now no longer being eaten by entropy. But he obvioulsy had no faith in this course of action or else he wouldn't have bothered with having Castrovalva exist for all this time.
What a lot of work and effort on the offchance that someone might decide to look up Dwellings of Simplicity (because of course that's the first thing I'd look up when recovering from a brush with The Big Bang) on that nice new BBC micro helpfully installed in the TARDIS which the Master had thought was going to be destroyed.

My brain hurts...

How come we don't see children/small size Cybermen... What are Cybermen's policy on children... do they convert them, do they wait for them to grow to a certain stage and then convert them or would they just leave/kill children as they don't meet their ideal form..

How come we don't see alien shaped Cybermen, surely its not just humans they are converting out in the galaxy... where is my alien octopus shaped Cyberman damn it!

How come some Daleks stay so clean... do they have a car wash service on their ships...

Well, I suppose this whole 'sound of drums' business could explain his/her confused thinking and tendency to worry about and over complicate things tremendously and end up getting all confused, but I prefer my own carefully considered take on The Master;

You could sort of apply this to the Cybermen as well!!!

I was thinking along similar lines what the Cybermen would actually do if they run out of 'spare parts' to convert. Sometimes I worry about their plans to destroy Earth and all humanity if their only source of upgrades actually lives there!!!

I also watched The Daemons the other day and just wondered, when The Master is captured by a load of Human Soldiers, why he just doesn't hypnotise them all at once and gain his release? In fact, he could just hypnotise everyone everywhere, then he wouldn't have to dream up such random plots(as described in above post)

My really worry is just where the hell The Doctor gets his sweets from? Does he have a specialist shop somewhere that sells jelly babies? Maybe Gallifrey had a secret shop somewhere with imports from Earth...(Really over thinking it now...)

Plus that old favourite, what do people do in the TARDIS in between adventures? Do they have a toilet, a restaurant and what happened to the food machine and just where did Ian Chesterton get all his shiny new suits, made to measure as well?! Considering he was dragged into outer space by The Doctor, you'd think maybe it was pre-planned by buying a whole wardrobe of suits for the first human who sussed his secret.......

Maybe that was a bit compensation for being kidnapped......

The TARDIS does indeed contain a couple of toilets, all fitted with a vortex manipulator sewage system that transports any waste into a place known as "Blackpool"

and that brings up another (very obvious) How come.... How come the Doctor always goes to the UK....

- How come Zygon shape shifting includes clothes... how does that work... if a Zygon turns into someone who has a coat, can they take that coat off, and if so and they take off that coat how does that work... is that like disposable body parts... a bit of body/flesh that can separate and turn into a coat, if the Zygon leaves the coat behind and never gets it back would that coat revert back into a bit of Zygon flesh... would that Zygon have lost part of its natural body (like an arm) or can they grow it back and indeed have the ability to grow extra flesh in-order to replicate clothes that can be independent from their shape-shifted body.... Ah the overthinking....

Also when the Zygons shape-shifted in to humans and blended into our society... are they, um, fully functional...

How come in classic who, the doctor & his companion(s) when hiding from an enemy, always carried out the worst form of hiding anywhere.

How come so many enemies especially matt smith era, were defeated by thinking good thoughts.

How come we haven't heard Romana being mentioned in Modern Doctor Who, even though she was made Lady President on Gallifrey in one of the novels back in the 90s?

For instance, I don't know for sure, but if Romana being Lady President in the novels is canon, then why didn't the Time Lords mention her in The End of Time, Day of the Doctor and Hell Bent?

And lastly, how come Romana was on Earth in London in Dimensions in Time? Unless Romana was on Gallifrey when The Rani meddled with various Doctors and Companions and she was transported somehow.

How come Eastenders exists in Doctor Who as a TV program when in Eastenders Doctor Who exists as a TV program...

How come the Sonic Screwdriver is a magic wand now?

Not heard anything about that.

As in instead of doing the basic things, it is now a weapon and absolutely everything the plot requires it to be.

They need to chill out on the use of the Sonic.
