Quorn mince and potato
Gusto Brunt
30-04-2016
I am probably the worst cook ever. I can't even boil an egg.

BUT, yesterday evening I thought I'd buy some Quorn mince and some cheap mash potato and then put something together that would be tasty.

It could either taste good, or like fried cardboard.

So I put the mince in a microwave boil. Added water. Some frozen onions. Peas, carrots and then cooked that in the microwave for six minutes. Took it out, added some gravy, and let it sit for four minutes while I popped some mash in the microwave.

Once done, I put the mash in the mince bowl and added some salt, and wow, it was lovely. Really enjoyed it.

I used to use Quorn mince. But i made it once as a savoury mince dish and was just slimy. That has put me off using it ever since.

You could make a much tastier meal with fresh food. Even if you are the world's worst cook it would be easy.

Get this stuff:

Some cooking oil
250 grms beef mince
1 Onion
2 carrots
salt pepper
oxo cube
tube of tomato paste
some potatoes

Peel the onion and Cut the onion and carrot up into little pieces (called dice).
Heat the oil on medium in a saucepan and fry the onion and carrot until the onion is soft. Put the mince in as well and fry till it's browned. Stir in a tablespoon of tomato paste and add enough water to cover the meat. Crumble in two oxo cubes and salt and pepper. Cook on the lowest heat while you do the mash. Meanwhile peel the potatoes, cut them up into pieces and boil them in another pan till they are soft (about 20 minutes). When they are soft drain the water away and mash them up with some butter, salt , pepper and a little milk. Put the mince and vegetables into a dish (use a slotted spoon so that some of the gravy is left in the pan, to serve with the finished meal). Pile the mashed potato on top and level with a fork. Brush with a little oil and brown under a hot grill. Takes a bit longer than your quorn and smash but it will taste better, be healthier and you will have COOKED.

I do something similar with beef mince but use sautéed potatoes not mash and I fry it.

It's similar to mince & tatties and hash.

You can cook fresh with Quorn just the same, it's all about what you do with the veggies and the cooking process.

Minced beef is not healthier than Quorn in fact it is less healthy. (I don't eat either so have no axe to grind).
