I agree James!!
Samia has Corrie running through her veins & is hugely popular with everyone connected to the show!! Whatever she is given she will not let anyone down!! She has a great attitude to life as well, reading that OK blog!! Ditto She is indeed!! She was fabulous for two years solid throughout the whole Liam/Tony/Carla/Maria s/l & again during the Frank/Carla stuff!!! I hope you're right LM, I really do!! Todd is showing signs of improvement but poor Helen Worth must absolutely despair at ehat's been done to her character in recent years!! I agree Lou!! Maria was one of the best characters on the show throughout the 00's and with a few decent storylines could be again!! Hi Loz!! Yes agree it is well overdue!! I would love to see her & Ty back together at some point in the future, though I do like her with Luke!! I want this to happen!! It would give Samia something imteresting & challenging to get her teeth into again!! I'm delighted too!! ![]() It's really encouraging for me as a Maria/Samia fan to see all these positive comments!! It really narks me when oeople say she can't act because it's complete bo**ocks!! As for her being dull, dreary or boring, fair enough given the material or lack of it she's had!! Try seeing how interesting any character is if you give them nothing to do, forget all their past history & give them a few throwaway scenes with very little dialogue for two years!! She never used to be dull!! Great he may have been & I realise I'm going to be cosidered a heathen of the highest order but the language he uses just does not speak to me in any shape or form!! Keyser tried to educate me in that thread a few days ago but the half page of quote, prose, whatever you like to call it was complete gobbledegook to me & I really can't be bothered to spend half a day trying to analyse it!! A few years ago, being a massive fan of David Tennant as an actor I started to watch him in a TV adaptation of I think it was Hamlet & after 5 minutes I literally had to turn it off because it was getting on my nerves so badly!! So yes I'm delighted for all you fans out there but please don't ask me to ever read, watch or listen to it!! ![]() ![]() Shall we move on to dreary Maria

I'd add something original to this thread but ndd has already said everything for me.
Love Maria. She's a fantastic character. More importantly she is a believable character - a rare commodity on Coronation Street these days. What does grate on me is people like Hanna_Yasmin and Beautiful_Harv suggesting that Samia is lazy, unambitious and self-serving because she's had the same job for over 15 years. Yes your names are in bold because this really gets up my nose. If a teacher, shop worker or nurse works in the same place for that length of time are they lazy freeloaders who know that they are onto a good thing? By your reckoning, they are. Taking loads of time off? What a load of garbage. You'll find that that's called maternity leave, something to which all women are entitled. Loyalty and dedication should be celebrated, especially within the soap genre where established characters are the foundation of the show. Just because someone is an actor doesn't mean that they have to change their job every year or so. Back to Maria. I have discussed this before but Maria needs to be given a prominent position in Coronation Street. I'd like to see this happen before she is given any big stories. The key priority is to move her into one of the houses on the Street - either one of the terraces or maybe No.6. Having her cooped up in a tiny flat is not fitting for the character. A few years ago I would have liked to have seen her buy the salon from David/Audrey but I feel that that moment has passed. Once she's established in her own home, then I'd like to see the storylines begin to develop. One idea I have would be if Maria moved into one of the terraces and would involve animal cruelty and then psychological abuse by a neighbour. Maria becomes suspicious that a neighbour living in Mawdsley Street is neglecting their pet dog(s). This would play out across the back yards and make use of the addition of Mawdsley Street to the new set. It would also delve into Maria's history as a kennel maid. Maria grows concerned over the safety of the dog(s) and reports the perpetrator to the RSPCA. He could be given a fine and be banned from keeping animals in the future. A really shady character, he then become obsessed with getting revenge on Maria. Initially this would come across as petty acts of revenge, such as dumping dog dirt/manure into Maria's yard or vandalising her house, but it could escalate into more psychological-driven abuse as the story progresses. Just an idea. |

Oh dear. Come back Blackburn, all is forgiven! Whatever else his faults,he never showed much interest in this particularly boring character. Not an encouraging start to the Kate Oates era. Let's hope that Samia's over egging this...

This is great news, Samia is a strong actress and deserves some decent material. I thought she did amazing with the stillbirth storyline.

Just an idea. It annoys the crap out of me too when people say she only stays at Corrie because she's lazy, can't act or wouldn't get work elsewhere!! I won't deny that Corrie has been good for her in a practical way, ie if she's in a big storyline, then great if not she can spend time with her young family, she's said that herself in countless interviews but so what? When she's given something to act she incariably gives 100% to it, always playing it in a way that is true to her character & always in a realistic, true to life, straight & honest way!! If that makes her character dull & boring to some then so be it!! As for getting work elsewhere, maybe, maybe not!! She's the wrong side of 30 now which doesn't help but why would she even want to try!! As I said earlier she loves and is loved by seemingly every single person connected with the show so with that level of job satisfaction, surely it has to be a no brainer (no puns on Maria's intelligence here please )As for your suggested storyline I love the idea, again something new & different instead of just lumping her with endless relationship storylines, (not that I am really complaining about those as they have all been wildly different & interesting in their own way!!) I will repeat with a little imagination Maria could again become the loveable if occasionally somewhat frustratingly naive little character she was in the 00's, but with a much more focussed and mature persona brought about by being a single parent who has been through some pretty trying times but come through them with a strength of character that very few people give her credit for!! |

Great posts NotDebbieDingle and KornerKabin. Completely agree with everything you've said.
Maria is one of the few characters that seems to have escaped the general chaos and personality transplants that longer standing Corrie characters have had since 2006 (other than that brief, and now forgotten, spell of pretending to be Kirsty the other year). I've not really found Maria 'interesting' since she was with Liam but have to say that Samia was excellent in the Tony Gordon storyline, even though I didn't particularly like it, and her acting in the episode where she found out Tony had killed Liam and tried to drown Roy was right up there with David Neilson and Julie Hesmondhalgh in my opinion. I find Samia to be similar in acting style to Sammy Winward in that she's very good at the natural day to day scenes which makes me wonder if that's how she gets dismissed as 'boring'. Hopefully Oates will have some decent material for her and the character can actually have some worthy screentime and character development. |

Are you serious? You'd rather have a terrible producer rather than see more of Maria? Despite all the serious storylines revolving around Maria being pretty damn good? She was great after Liam died and she was the only one to suss Tony (Shame she got with him after that but that's another matter!) She was also good when she secretly stalked Tyrone. That was a very good storyline.

Have to disagree,I'm afraid. I've never been remotely impressed by her performance in any story. Acting wise,I'd put her on a par with someone like Kym Marsh. Adequate in the day to day type scenes, but it all gets a get cringe making when they have to do anything dramatic or emotional. I could never imagine either of them getting a tv role outside of the soaps. I reckon they couldn't either, hence their decision to stay "loyal" to the programme, even when their characters have been low profile like Maria has been in recent years.

Very true. Didn't mean to sound too harsh. It's just that she's one of those actresses/characters who I don't think add to the show at all. But,I'd better not get started on that again.😀

I saw some of that and turned it off. That's because David Tennant was crap. Even Mel Gibson was better. As for Maria, I hope she gets some decent stuff. |

Nice to see Kate Oates giving more cast members a direction especially those who have been loyal to the show despite being given next to no material.

As it involves Dreary Maria, probably a dull, over-hyped one. Involving a man or two.
