The very idea of a Maria storyline is likely to send me to sleep! She's had plenty of storylines over the years but she has never been compelling to watch and the writers know it, IMO. She works best as a background character so best of luck with that one, Kate!

Fair enough, we'll never agree on this one but I empathise with you to a degree as I feel exactly the same way about Tracy Barlow!!
Since her return in 2002 virtually all she has done is engage in feud after feud with another woman over a bloke (for over 10 years the same bloke) & anything involving her now sends me comatose!!
I do find Maria compelling because of reasons I've already mentioned, ie she is an ordinary, believable character who you could find on any street, whereas Tracy doesn't compel me in the slightest as she's little more than a pantomime character!!

I am a little puzzled by the seeming contradiction that the writers know Maria isn't compelling to watch yet they have given her plenty of storylines over the years?

Yes, IMO they have tried to make Maria (and others) more compelling. I can only assume that's why they decided to turn her into Tyrone's stalker. It never works though, sorry!

I agree with you to a point about the pantomime villain, Tracy. She's one dimensional and I don't think the writers have got a clue what to do with her, which is why it's the same thing over and over.

How Why would she be involved with him.

I don't really see what either Leanne or Carla have done wrong with Nick and his injuries and I honestly cannot see what Maria could do any better. He needs medical help to be honest.

I am sure her new story lines will be men-centric though as that is all there really is to Maria
One way in which Maria differs from Leanne & Carla is that she is not feisty, at least these days. So, she may be able to reassure Nick in a different way from either of the others.

Leaving Maria out of it (for once ), Nick could not have chosen a worse partner than Carla for his condition if he'd searched the world over!!
The woman has more issues of her own that will impact on Nick than his brain injury could ever cause, not least the fact she's forced him to give up everything he had built up, just because she has a guilty conscience!! It's very likely the stress & upheaval that has brought on his relapse in the first place!! I'm afraid I can't see past those two being one of the biggest mismatches in Corrie history but hey Carla wants him so she will get him no matter what it does to his sanity!!
He'll need psychiatric help never mind medical help by the time she's finished with him!!

So these are Oates 'exciting' plans for Maria? A quickie with the local businessman, dumping her latest lover, impending feud with new 'bessie' and inviting the Crazy Caz Lady into her home.

Maria was boorish and dreary at times tonight, slowly morphing into a spinster from an Austen novel..........can picture her in a rocking chair going on about her doomed relationships. Sincerely hope things look up........the only interesting thing Maria said was making a reference about Liam, arguably her last meaty storyline.
