Kind of with Terrance here. One thing that's bothered me about New Who from the beginning is this apparent need of sexual tension just to please the modern audiences. It's especially tedious when it involves the Doctor as romance and sexual tension just take away from his character in my opinion.

But then, I'm not much of a fan of sex in storytelling, at least not the way it's mostly used today. Sure, as people, we like sex... I also like Oreos but I don't really want stories about them.

Damn. I saw the topic title and for a moment was concerned that Dicks had died. Please try and give a fuller subject heading than just a person's name.

Is it possible for OP to change the thread title? I thought the worst too, when I saw it.

Precisely.... "Uncle" Terrance through his many Target novelisations was my first introduction to the First, Second and Third Doctors

Only autograph I got in the 1983 Longleat mayhem as a kid. I can't really remember why, but chose The Abominable Snowman Target book. He was charming and said "Good choice!" with a twinkle. Bet he said that to all the kids. Whatever book. And quite right too.

Lovely bloke, and when it comes to the Doctor, am pretty much with him. River Song worked for me, generally, as she was a bit different. Romana might've worked, but romance in general with the chappie? Cul de Sac. Artistic dead end. Captain Kirk syndrome. Etc.

Another vote here for being very much glad that Uncle Terrance is still with us. It always raises a smile when he pops up on the DVD extras and it's nice to hear about him having some banter with Moffat.

I agree totally with Terrance, and one of the reasons I will always prefer the original show to the new one.

Doctor Who is not supposed to be Superman, nor his assistant a Lois Lane. If this is what it is, and if this is what the "modern audience truly wants" (or trying to attain wider appeal quite possibly) then thank God I've got my DVD collection and not a greater number of episodes of the original series are lost.

At least with Capaldi's interpretation there seems to be a deliberant effort to make his Doctor more akin to the spirit of original Who.

I feared the worst as well....

Those examples quoted in the article don't exactly back the story up, 11 completely rejected Amy's advances, while 11 kissing Jenny Flint wasn't a sexual thing. 11 kissed Rory as well, he was very tactile! 11 and River would be different...

Anyway, who didn't feel a tiny hint of romantic pain in the Doctor when Jo left him at the end of The Green Death...

I too thought TD had pegged it when I saw this! Phew!

I'm listening to his audio commentaries from the Pertwee Era at the moment and it still makes me chuckle that on every one is the often quoted story of Pertwee's increasing bouffant hairdo! He so loves telling that story!

As for the article, well, I think you always get this kind of chat from those involved in Classic Who. You listen to them on the audio's and they often don't like a lot of the stuff from the new series. I agree with some of them but can often understand their point of view, sometimes I disagree. On this subject, Dicks does have a point to a degree but there again the show has to move with the times. I personally glad we've gone back to a more Classic Doctor style Doctor as it probably did go OTT when Tennant was The Doctor.

I suppose after being at an industry soiree and ending up having a row with Moffat caused by sex, Dicks should consider himself lucky not to have been erased from Doctor Who.

The scene where Amy throws herself at the Doctor and then squirms about on the bed like a dog on heat was the moment I began to fully realise that Moffat was running Doctor Who right off the rails. Horribly, horribly misjudged and helped make an already cold and unlikable character downright detestable.

Uncle Terrance is definitely right.

Typical of the charmless Mr Moffat to be described as heckling him from across the room.

Aw come on. They had a photo together and Moffat is a big fan of Mr Dicks. Sure it was all amiable stuff.
