Many phones with AMOLED displays have an automatic mode to adjust the saturation, and it's well known that people perceive more colours (or more vivid colours) as being better - but that's just perception. TVs are always in vivid/dynamic modes that people should turn off as soon as possible at home!
I can change that on my Nexus 6P, albeit in the developer settings menu, as I prefer colours to be more real than overblown.
It does seem like ALL manufacturers are clutching at straws to find ways to sell new hardware.
For me, I am likely to upgrade if a new device supports faster Wi-Fi (or has better antennas) or maybe a higher category 4G service for faster/more reliable speeds. These are the same sorts of thing that makes me upgrade a PC (or Mac in my case).
But those things aren't sexy and most customers wouldn't even know, so you end up with things like 6GB of RAM (but factory shipping with a limit of 20 apps before additional apps are killed, so the RAM never gets fully used) and 'True Tone'.
Perhaps for an iPad Pro, such a thing might be good for people who work with images but you have colour profiles for that and the screen should be configured out of the factory anyway?
