Well given the Z5 was allegedly to be a later roll out than the Z3 then it's not looking to hopeful for Z3/Z3C owners.

Clearly Tim Cook misspoke - he meant it won't have things you can't live without.

Maybe this is a cant-live-without feature for iPhone users. I've certainly found it very useful on my phone for the last few years ....

I'm sorry but this is more of a dig at digital spy than IOS.... Is this really the best they can come up with for a "headline article" ?? iPhones get a feature that's been available elsewhere for years .... ?

Simps, sorry, Google did it!

Remember when both Microsoft and Apple made a big deal about seeing a photo for the incoming caller, when Symbian and even feature phones had been doing that for years?

As I say this is more of a dig at digital spy headlines. I appreciate apple will advertise new features for their users but the article is suggesting this is something groundbreaking and unheard of ....

A lot of tech journos are very young (it's not a very well paid gig, so many leave and are replaced by new people fresh out of uni) so it's quite common to see a lot of stories like this - certainly not limited to Apple - where a lack of knowledge means not seeing through the spin. They really may not know something was done before.

Older, cynical, hacks like me are usually quite quick to spot such things.. you only need to read the Register or Inquirer for examples!

The must have features will be hardware related to drive upgrades. True Tone is a game changer once you experience it for the first time, you'll never want to go back to using iPhones without it. I'm sure the new iPhones this year will have True Tone.

I'm very old.. well 40s anyway and I have to say I've been driving a car for about 30 years and have not yet forgotten where i parked it. "Hey Siri, can you compensate for my stupidity and remember where my car is please".
I just hope this bloody 7 has a teasmade, that's all....

I've heard from a very reliable source that it's going to have Technicolor technology.

I can't really see how this will be that much of a game changer.

I can change colour temperature on my phone and TV, and I am sure some TVs will also do it automatically (along with other settings) based on ambient light - but your eyes adjust quite quickly.

Try using one of the various night mode apps (and indeed iOS and Android N have such modes in them now) and let yourself get used to it. Then turn it off and revert to normal - it suddenly seems like quite a shock. Now if you gradually change the colours, it's possible to barely notice despite a massive change - so how most people will notice a fairly subtle change is beyond me.

I looked at a block of flats recently where someone had a very cool white bulb in their living room. It stood out amongst most warm 'yellow' lighting, but if I stepped into that room I am sure my eyes would compensate. To get back to technology, put two devices side by side and you can see differences and begin to say 'this is more green/yellow' or notice grey levels are different.

Differences you ONLY see when both are next to each other. Just like all those images that get shared around social media that show how your eyes fool you.

To me such an idea is another gimmick.

Agreed. "Slightly better colour" sounds a bit like "slightly higher resolution" ...... Inevitable changes but no "can't live without"

I'm mid 40s and I sense that needing to know where I'm parked using my phone could well be a future requirement

Many phones with AMOLED displays have an automatic mode to adjust the saturation, and it's well known that people perceive more colours (or more vivid colours) as being better - but that's just perception. TVs are always in vivid/dynamic modes that people should turn off as soon as possible at home!

I can change that on my Nexus 6P, albeit in the developer settings menu, as I prefer colours to be more real than overblown.

It does seem like ALL manufacturers are clutching at straws to find ways to sell new hardware.

For me, I am likely to upgrade if a new device supports faster Wi-Fi (or has better antennas) or maybe a higher category 4G service for faster/more reliable speeds. These are the same sorts of thing that makes me upgrade a PC (or Mac in my case).

But those things aren't sexy and most customers wouldn't even know, so you end up with things like 6GB of RAM (but factory shipping with a limit of 20 apps before additional apps are killed, so the RAM never gets fully used) and 'True Tone'.

Perhaps for an iPad Pro, such a thing might be good for people who work with images but you have colour profiles for that and the screen should be configured out of the factory anyway?

The press have gone big on the very melodramtic headphone socket.

Yet they are complicily omitting the news fact that China were playing hard ball with regards to handing over IOS source code. It was the very first thing that entered my head when Apple left IOS 10 beta unencrypted. There is hardly a murmur on the China factor behind this.

In fact, it is looking like a big fib to me. They far far more likely did it to appease China.

I almost get the imression now that there will be no iPhone 7s, Apple jumping to 8 2017 or even changing the word iPhone to something new.

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20160628PD208.html

Repeatedly we are told it is 2017 when Apple moves to using high end OLED. Folding phones arrive 2017 so it is unlikely not to be folding OLED phones by Apple too.

iPhone 7, a one off quirky design then?

Apple will definitely have something released this year. It doesn't need to be radically different, just a slightly different design to entice people to upgrade who wouldn't be seen dead with 'last year's model' once it's quite apparent it is, and then improve a few things that look good in slides like '4x faster', '8.5 times funner'.

If they go with OLED, there will be loads of slides about colour accuracy and how it makes your family lead a better life by having nicer photos of each other.

It matters not if some people are cynical and see through a lot of it as marketing junk, like putting 6GB of RAM on a phone. The fact is, a new iPhone will mean new sales and more profits.

Do Apple have a patent on the word 'funner'? Might be worth somebody spending a month of their life to check that.

I'll be getting this years phone regardless of how groundbreaker it is. My iPhone 6 only has 1GB RAM.

And what is it that you can't actually do on your existing phone that will be fixed with more RAM ?

I was thinking the same, the latest update to Waze has this feature - not sure I can turn it off. I don't need it. Car is a nice expensive big thing and you don't tend to lose them unless completely drunk (and of course you're not driving then so it doesnt matter!).

Or so that its open the US Govt has not 'hidden' stuff in there.

Or it could be that whilst they said very recent they had refused China, they might also have complied too.
https://techcrunch.com/2016/04/19/ap...s-source-code/

More likely China gave them a deadline which they chose to fulfill globally.

But what about the things that you can do on your current iPhone 6, that you can't do with your iPhone 7? 3.5mm port anyone?

I'd NEVER contemplate buying anything that doesn't have 3.5mm, as most of my audio stuff is 3.5mm, not Bluetooth...
