Audio fidelity over Bluetooth is worse than a 3.5mm jack. I only use it for speech playback, never music.

Sadly it's going to happen. Apple being rumoured go do it prompted Motorola and some other Chinese firms to do it first, and as an industry as a whole it is great for selling new accessories and speakers etc. Whether Lighting or USB-C.

I personally don't see the need, but smartphone sales are slowing. Everyone is looking for something new.

Also we soon won't own a car anyway. We'll simply summon one when we need one.
This has two advantages.
You can't lose your car.
You can get a car to take you to the pub, you get totally rat arsed and then a car brings you back.
Win win.

You can't say never. One day no handset will have a 3.5mm jack.
It'll be quite soon too. That means you'll no longer be able to have a mobile!
Bill Gates once said we would never make a 32 bit operating system.
Never say never.

It's not what I can't do, it's the fact that browser tabs have to reload, apps have to reload etc.

My iPad with 2GB RAM doesn't have these issues.

Do you also not contemplate buying anything that doesn't have Scart?

So is the iPhone 7 out already? I didn't think it was out for a couple of months.

In regards to the Bluetooth audio, I can see both advantages & disadvantages to it. With the 3.5 jack you have a massive range of headphones to choose from, just plug in and go. However having said that, I love using my Bluetooth headphones, as my mobile is my music player when on the move, I never miss a call / text / Whatsapp message. The only downside with Bluetooth audio is that it can be a battery killer, so if you are on a long train / flight, you could easily kill your battery before the journey has finished.

Doesn't your phone let you know when you get a call / text etc when your listening to music?

I can't say when I had a 6 that I ever really saw that as a problem and generally I leave tons of tabs open.

And let's not forget that as far as Apple is concerned it doesn't even exist yet, they have not announced anything, not even the fact there will be a phone this autumn.
Let's also not prejudge the potential decision that the rumour mill thinks they have made. Even if they do remove the jack, Apple do have a track record (not always - before someone jumps down my throat) of making a new feature attractive in a way that mitigates the loss of the old feature. At the moment all the media can see is the downside.

It is amazing how many people didn't realise there was anything wrong with their headphones until Apple told them.

I prefer earphones to bluetooth, that's why I'm hoping Apple have something special up their sleeves, or I will be as disgruntled as the next man - or swordman

A full(*) fidelity wireless alternative to Bluetooth?

(*) Or at least full enough not to be the limiting factor as we have now.

The overriding problems with any wireless technology are price and battery life.

I won't buy a phone that doesn't have a 3.5mm. Adapters/dongles were a crap idea in the days when phones had really weird connectors, they're a bad idea in the present day where some phones have one weird connector and some have another

Oh well. Hopefully they will be adaptors out there for most of my 3.5mm connections for as and when I am forced to get something that doesn't have a 3.5mm connection...
Though hopefully that day will be a long way away for most devices!

I hope not, as I only have one Bluetooth speaker, no Bluetooth headphones, and no USB based headphones/speakers either. Almost all of my speakers, and all of my headphones/earphones, are 3.5mm. I don't want to be having to replace all of my headphones yet.

In regards to the 32 bit/64 bit OS, yep Windows XP did have an x64 mode, but Windows 7 was when 64 bit was mostly seen.

I don't need Scart though, as most of my stuff has a HDMI connector and my TV (and laptop) have HDMI connectors. HDMI has been out for quite a while now and I have plenty of HDMI devices, so I don't need SCART. Unlike 3.5mm, whereby I have pretty much everything using 3.5mm. And I'm not replacing my 5.1 computer speakers (which has 3.5mm, optical and coax - most of my stuff is 3.5mm) anytime soon!

Free 3.5mm adaptor for beans!

Seriously the bit that annoys me is yet another li-ion battery to charge for no good reason. If the 3.5mm connector is missing I hope the sales are dismal and Apple restore on iPhone 7s/8 next year. Like Samsung S6 without micro-SD and the S7.

XP 64bit was actually Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 edition with a new loading screen. There was almost no end user applications. 64bit end user OS appeared with VISTA and the x64 version of Vista was dramatically better than the x86 (32bit) - I ran this for quite a while. With Windows 7 (2009) the price of RAM had come down so businesses could think of supplying 4GB to each employee desktop/laptop making 64bit become the mainstream.

HDMI was the invention in the USA and requires royalties. Hence why you don't see it on many computer systems except those aimed at home users. Corporate all use the royalty free DVI connector and now DisplayPort.

Lots of cars that people plug phones into have only 3.5mm line inputs. Having to carry an adaptor will be a pain - plus the adaptor in the rumour pictures doesn't have an input for power at the same time, so you can't charge and listen to headphones? No that doesn't add up to me.

Looks like another year Apple won't persuade me to come back. That'll be four years and counting and I've almost given up.

If Apple does it, you can be sure it won't back down and bring a 3.5mm port back. Never would it admit defeat, but I suspect the bulk of users would not only accept it but point out how much they hated 3.5mm sockets all along.

Anyone that says otherwise will just be some outcast luddite.

I suspect Apple will go on about how unreliable cables are as they are prone to breaking. Personaly I've been using Bluetooth Sony headphones for a few years and love them.

No doubt they will give away a free 3.5mm dongle adapter with the new iPhone and probably charge £25 for a replacement in case you loose it which does seem likely if it's small. Plus Apple save money by not having to put a jack socket on the iPhones. There will be substantial savings for Apple. What's not to like about this model? The accounts will be wetting themselves with excitement.

Ha ha. Charging headphones daily? Having headphones in bag that don't work because you've not used them for 4 days and now need to charge, but didn't bring the charger, which will be different to phone charger. Quite likely.
