Tim Cook has given a hint that the new iPhone will have a features that you cant live without and it will make people want to upgrade.

Whether this is something genuinely new or Apples version of something that already exists remains to be seen.

Meanwhile there are plenty of believe it or not rumours here:

It's just the usual sales pitch we hear from anyone with something to flog. It is bizarre how folk can be persuaded that they 'can't live without' something.

I assume there will be wired headphones, just using Lightning or USB-C (surely Apple will switch one day?) so charging won't be essential. You'll just need an adapter.

Unless Apple requires a chip inside headphones and speakers to ensure they are properly compatible, so you'll need to replace perfectly good existing ones.

I'm not sure why wired headphones are needed these days. Apple should sell the phone with a wireless pair and then they can get rid of the socket, which helps with water proofing and making the phone thin etc and also the design.

We've got Bluetooth 4.X now and really you just don't need wires, most cars have Bluetooth or Bluetooth adaptors are very cheap.

Like on the laptops for ethernet. Shame the competition (e.g. Asus) have managed to have equally thin and fast laptops that include the ethernet port. Sometimes Apple go a bit beyond the call of duty

I don't see Apple switching to USB-C on the iOS devices; given the lightning port is now well established and there is a healthy third party ecosystem. It wasn't an issue before when Nokia/Samsung etc all had their own ports. I grant you that USB-C solves all the problems with micro-USB and so there is no reason to have your own anymore. It just took 4 years for the USB committee to get there. (And Apple's 2016 MacBook is USB-C only !)

Plus too many faulty USB-C cables; none of this issue with Lightning:

Yeah, that's always possible, but they don't want to get into hot water with US FTC, or EU etc (as Google and Microsoft have and are) - again, after the ebook issue.

Charging two devices is a pain. Especially if you use headphones say once a week, or randomly at work to cut out background noise (e.g. open offices). You'd be tethered to the power supply instead - at the moment they're powered by the phone.

Nothing against wireless headphones, just need both.

Which means that instead of carrying a single pair of headphones you would now need to carry two pairs or one pair and a way of charging it. Progress? I think not.

I think all the issues with USB-C have been addressed now, thanks in part to one Google employee who tested loads off his own back, and highlighted the problems.

But Apple will likely cling on to its proprietary connector for as long as possible.

I believe plenty of bad cables still around, and how was a port designed for the consumer market that can cause a user supplied cable to break the device? Seems a bit pathetic to me.

They would annoy all their customers by changing, and its not as if they need to change. No advantage.

Nobody cared when samsung had a proprietary port for years

Yes they did, and it prompted the industry to work together to create a universal connector in the form of micro USB.

It's worth noting the dodgy cables were nearly all, if not entirely all, cheap Chinese cables released by companies that didn't understand the specs. There have been just as many dodgy power supplies and cables (and batteries) released for Apple over the years. Suffice to say, the cables sold by Apple and Google (for the Nexus phones) were fine from day one.

It's worrying that OnePlus didn't even get things right!

Wireless headphones?!! As I've mentioned before, Apple need to sort out the simple missing features first such as being able to choose which album you save a photo in, rather than giving us things like wireless headphones.

Do we know Apple is going wireless only? I can't imagine that being true.

I don't really see the connection. I can't believe the team working on removing the hardware port is the same team working on the photo app.

That's because they're changing it.

But it's stupid having a device that can do advanced functions (potentially wireless headphones) and having features such as a fantastic camera, when it can't perform basic functions such as letting you choose where to save a picture. It's just ridiculous.

Another interesting point of view here:

Personally I think there's a lot of stupid things about how Apple software works, but that doesn't mean I want them to stop developing the hardware.

How old is the 3.5mm jack? It just works and I don't see it as particularly big, but then I don't want a device thinner than that as it probably means it has compromised rigidity and battery capacity.

I don't see calls to replace our 3 pin plugs, clunky as they are, and don't feel Apple, or anyone, needs to change it. We have wireless options for those who don't want wires or connectors.

I also don't think we need 6GB of RAM, Iris detectors and other gimmicks that the industry is now adopting to give ordinary consumers a reason to upgrade.

For me, reasons to upgrade might be better/faster Wi-Fi and 4G standards support and other things that aren't really sexy, but make my day to day life better.

Apple is going for somewhat superficial features because it can present them nicely at a keynote. And the whole industry is doing the same, because most people can't live without what they already own and don't necessarily feel a need to change.

Looks like this may be a prototype iPhone 7?

As we edge ever closer to the announcement in September I'd imagine that's the "real deal".

From a physical point of view I can't see any reason why anyone with a 6/6s would upgrade (apart from the A10 processor).

Whatever it is Tim Cook & co. need to start innovating again.

If there's no headphone socket I'd actually consider getting a 6S even after the 7 is released.

Even is, as is rumoured, the 7 may come with an included lightning to headphone socket adaptor????

For myself the choice between 6S and 7 will probably depend on just how much better the 7's camera is

Dual camera with a 2 lens system on the 7 Plus. Sources indicate the two-lens system, which will feature exclusively on the iPhone 7 Plus, will function in a similar way to the one seen on the Huawei P9.

According to a person who has used a prototype version of the camera, each lens captures different colours and combines them into one highly detailed, bright, vivid photograph. On Huawei's phone, one lens takes photographs in black and white while the other captures red, green and blue. The system's performance in low light conditions is a noticeable step-up.

I know. Isn't it wonderful to be able to step outside the bubble of manipulation that consumerism bestows on us ?

Needs and desires are two very different things. Marketing tries (very successfully) to create a "need" where there is only a flimsy desire. Lowering people's self-esteem by implying that they're not as good as those who have the latest technology is a technique the marketing people have down to a fine art.
