It is mad that Apple charges the same price for ancient hardware on the Mac line, and I can't believe many people still buy them - so how this benefits shareholders, I do not know.

If Mac loses sales, and more people are tempted to other platforms (whether Windows or even iOS with an iPad Pro) then surely it means the days of future Mac development will be numbered.

So, by scrimping on investment in newer chipsets, it could kill an entire platform.

I didn't like to say. Gotta love the irony.

I love how with Apple, something like 'due to initial popularity, the jet black model is only available on back order' has to become a 'rabid obsession with getting a matte black model'.

To be fair, matte black and jet back are both very difficult to buy at the moment due to popularity.

To be fair, that's covered by due to initial popularity, the jet black model is only available on back order'.

Why does it have to be due to a rabid obsession?

Slightly OTT and melodramatic, don't you think?

I was just commenting on the hard to get remark. Both finishes are hard to get right now.

I've been accused of being a rabid Apple fan boy in this thread - despite the fact I have a Windows laptop (my most recently purchased computer), Linux desktop, Windows Phone, in addition to my MacBook Pro and all the iOS devices I own.

This forum definitely leans very strongly towards favouring Android in terms of the active contributors. It's hard having a positive conversation about Apple products, because you'll always get some Samsung fan, or an Xperia afficando claiming their own phone can run for a full month without a battery recharge - and that the iPhone just pales in comparison to everything. I just put the most annoying people on my ignored user list and move on. (I also invite others who I keep bumping into to do the same, because it's not fair on other members to see threads ruined by never-ending back and forths)

I've seen plenty people mention getting matte black, there were reports EE was ringing people offering them larger capacity matte black in place of jet black as they had received more allocation of them than expected.

Ok I see Apple are now quoting a 6-8 week wait on Jet Black. Wow!

I've also heard some people have had some success getting matte black phones, but they are definitely not easy to get either atm.

Weren't they having problems with the manufacturing of the jet black one? Something to do with the process to create the finish was only having a low yield, so a lot are being rejected as defective?

Yep something like only 60%-70% were meeting Apple's required standards.

Why wow? It's because the yield rate is so low. I wonder how much trouble Apple is having making them? And even if you get one that's 'perfect' it won't be for long.

A statement from Apple that the 7 plus would not be available to any walk in customer and the black is sold out totally. It doesn't get any more official than the company itself.

You obviously aren't keeping up with events.

I'm not sure what aurichie is going to say about the new Google Pixel phone launched today. He was claiming the camera on the iPhone 7 plus is the best camera ever on a smartphone. It's not what the well respected experts are saying -

The best camera on the market?
Google's justification for calling the Pixel "the best phone camera in the world" is this review by DxOMark, seen as an authority on all things photography.

They've given the phone a score of 89, which compares to 88 for the Galaxy S7 Edge and 86 for the iPhone 7 plus. Here's their summary

Simply put, the Pixel raises the bar for what is possible with a smartphone camera. Image quality continues to improve, and the increased use of HDR+ to render scenes that have previously been difficult for small sensors such as those in smartphones broadens what is possible with these ubiquitous devices. While we have reviewed other smartphone cameras that matched the Pixel’s numbers in a few categories, the Pixel is uniquely capable of capturing outstanding images under a wide variety of conditions, and is also among the best we have tested for video capture.

Well judging by the other thread discussing today's Pixel announcements, suddenly I'm a lot more bullish on these devices than current Android users. It's probably not a huge surprise. I'm always happy to pay a premium for the best technology. Google has gone from making affordably mediocre phones that don't interest me, to making something more costly that could potentially be an amazing device.

If these Pixel handsets truly do live up to the premium price tag, I'll be very tempted to buy one. Not immediately, I'm having too much fun with my iPhone 7 Plus atm. But maybe after Christmas I'll treat myself. I've been saying for the last couple of years I really should have a pure Android reference device for my business. The new Pixel XL may well finally convince me to pull the trigger on a purchase.

It supports VoLTE out of the box so at least you wouldn't lose that if you're on EE.

How about discussing the Pixel phones in the Pixel thread?

Personally I'm getting fed up with the likes of Faust and aurichie whose only purpose appears to be to antagonise each other.

The point I make is that a lot of Apple owners only want to accept reviews that are positive to Apple and simply can't accept that there are other products out there that are just as good if not better than Apple.

I have a Mac, iPhone, Apple TV etc. However, I also have Android and Microsoft devices and I'm quite willing to accept that they also make products just as good and in some cases better than Apple.

I simply cannot abide this almost worshiping of products - it's simply bizarre and not healthy.

You obviously haven't been reading what I've been saying. I understand perfectly well that , due to initial popularity, the jet black model is only available on back order.

Its the whole 'rabid obsession' thing I'm less sure of.

Do you actually know anyone who seems to be rabidly obsessed about it? Or have you just read some stuff online about them being hard to get, and simply chosen to use the term in order to reinforce the stereotype that you like to believe?

You know, if you say something often enough, you might just believe it.

Your constant denigration is just as bizarre and also not healthy...

Well, Google now wants to attract the same type of person with the whole 'persona' of the new Pixel phones. You know as well as everyone that there are fanatical people who are incredibly blinkered and go along with whatever their favourite companies and brands say (we have a good example on this thread!).

Google now wants to try and get their money, but I think they'll find it rather hard to do. Apple has built up its name and reputation for many years. Google was for years a services company, or thought of as search engine.

But, Google is trying because it understands the way Apple works and how it makes obscene amounts of profit, and wants in.
calico_pie

Is that really what you think? That Google wants to sell its phones to the tiny minority of people who will buy anything made by Apple?

I would have thought, in order to maximise sales, revenue and profits, they would want to sell its phones to the mass market in huge numbers.

This is where this whole thing runs aground on its own contradiction - do Apple do well because they sell products to obsessives, or do they do well because their phone has such huge mass appeal?

Absolutely!

Speaking for myself I think the whole flagship phone business is a huge profit making scam which customers constantly fall for.

Apple, Google, Samsung et al. - they are all hugely overpriced and I wouldn't pay list price for any one of them. £350 tops would be a more than fair price. It's certainly the price limit I put on any phone I buy and I haven't broken it yet.

A massive helping of both.

Whether you believe that depends if you are the sort of person who is able and prepared to be honest and open minded about all things Apple. There's a huge amount of 'following the crowd' involved with the brand.
