"Another Magic-branded station is to launch on DAB, but this one is a commercial product in association with MAMMA MIA!

Magic ABBA will appear for six weeks from midday Thursday 5th May, playing nothing but ABBA songs and features.

It comes shortly after the launch of two new Magic stations – Magic Chilled and Mellow Magic.

The station will be available on DAB digital radio in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Teesside, Tyne & Wear, Humberside, Leeds, Edinburgh, Northern Ireland, Tayside, Inverness and online."

I suspected that something was coming on the Niocast multiplex - with them running the carrier tone. Wow - Bauer using a small scale multiplex seems to show that there isn't enough capacity in the existing DAB network. proving the case for an expansion of the existing tier.

I wonder if Absolute 70's will replace Magic Abba in 6 weeks time.

Yes, was thinking that myself.

Listening 24/7 to ABBA music would drive me crazy.

Does running for six weeks still make it a pop-up?

No they are going to Clyde rocks for Glasgow 96.3.
The pop up is to encourage peope to see Magic of the Musicals at the Albert Hall London plus Mama MIA shows in London and Manchester. Mostly on Bauer owned muxes at low cost, if they use Pop-up on the Now muxes they would have to pay full rate (but Pop up is now closing).

I guess it's now possible that Abs 80s will return to Inverness and that's where the second vacancy went.

I wonder why its not on South Yorkshire? Maybe Trax FM remaining on DAB is using the capacity.

I would much rather have Planet Rock back on D1 than this 6 week Abba pop up.

I really fail to see the point of pop up stations and cant imagine many ordinary listeners actually bother to scan & tune in to them? Do people listen?

?

I'd say it depends on whether people have a reason to listen to it.

The BBC's pop-up stations so far have been to provide additional coverage of events (Eurovision) or seasonal coverage of genres (country, the recent 50s one).

The ABC in Australia do this more often, with their "Extra" channel devoted to limited-run programs on particular themes (they did an all-vinyl weekend once, outside of their music networks), or network-wide campaigns, or events, such as ANZAC Day.

Magic starting a six-week station devoted to Abba, though, is not reason enough, at least to me.

The Abba pop up is on some of the local multiplexes owned/co-owned (in the case of London) by Bauer apart from in Manchester - it's nothing to do with D1.

I had lunch with some friends today. Was very surprised when, unprompted, one of them told me he'd found this amazing new station on DAB - sure enough, Magic ABBA.

Most new radios don't need to be scanned, so I guess people will stumble across stations, particularly if it's named similarly to their usual one.

I wonder if there would be enough demand for a second full-scale multiplex in Manchester. Liverpool effectively has two (Bauer, and Muxco Wrexham/Chester/Liverpool).

Yes there would but Ofcom are likely unwilling to advertise a second unless they can find frequency availability. Manchester is pretty much full, hence why it never had Kisstory on it.

Magic Abba is playing a loop promoting Magic. A few music clips with presenters talking over them to promote their shows. Listeners are thanked for listening to Magic Abba and advised to retune to Magic.
