0500 calls from your O2 Pay and Go sim increasing from 15p per minute to 45p per minute.

And directory enquiries increasing from 1.00 per minute to 1.20 per minute.

Though the good news is that they are adding an extra 1GB to each tariff. The 15.00 tariff is a good one for those who often find 1GB a struggle to avoid exceeding on three’s All In One 10 tariff.

Quite a steep rise for 0500. Although do many organisations use these anymore?

Taxi companies use them still. But they do offer an alternative local number. Pointless calling the 0500 number from a mobile, though 0500 numbers are free from a landline including from a payphone.

But by next year 0500 numbers will be gone, replaced by 08085 numbers.

The now I get just under 1.5GB a month for my £15 a month as I joined the big bundles when they stil had the 50% extra data on the go. Have only been on the big bundles tariff just over 5 weeks. As I moved from the pay and go go go £10 tariff after getting an IPhone 5s to replace my over 2 year old Nexus 4 just under 2 months ago.
I can some months easily use near 300 text. Used to text far much more a good few years ago before I slplit from my x after 8 years or so and no longer text as much as I did but I still text a little more than I use my mobile to make calls.
I have not used directory enquirers for a few years now. For if I want a number I just look it up online or use the Thomson Local or Yellow Pages.
Cost of 0500 numbers is now a bit dear from a mobile but it can't remember the last time I phoned an 0500 number from any phone.

Will they be free or charged the same as 0500?

OFCOM really missed a trick to tidy up phone numbers once and for all. IMHO we should have-

0800 free from all phones.
01/02.03 standard
07 mobile
09 premium.

end of.

I totally agree. This cynical price rise from O2 for 0500 is their final squeezing of the last little drop of unscrupulous profit from supposed Freephone numbers. They are trying to cheat their customers by hoping they won't notice they are being charged a premium rate for what they assume is a Freephone number.

08085 numbers are free from all phones the way 0800 numbers are.

That is good news at least. I wonder why they can't just use 0800 then, or have they run out of numbers in the 0800 range?

Big talker will change to Simply pay as you go http://www.o2.co.uk/pricing?g=e&cm_m...-blank-_-blank

But for there o2 basic price plan where calls are 15p text 5p you will still have to call retention's to get o2 basic price plans as they are the only ones who can change you to o2 basic tariff

0808 freephone numbers have been around for years. There probably wasn't a big enough continuous free block of numbers to move the 0500 ones to 0800.

Another update from o2 making 4g available for legacy tariffs

Great news for our Pay & Go customers! We’re making a number of our Pay & Go tariffs 4G ready. So, from today (6th May 2016) any of our customers on the tariffs below who top up their allowance (manually or via recurring bill method) will be switched over to 4G.

The Pay As You Go tariffs going 4G include:
- All our Big Bundle tariffs
- All our International tariffs
- All our Big Talker tariffs

And our Legacy tariffs including:
- O2 Text
- Web Pay and Go Go Go

So how does it work, you ask?

Shortly after topping up (from today), you’ll get a text message which reads:
- “O2: Great news. Your Pay As You Go tariff now comes with superfast 4G. If you have 4G Phone, Sim and Coverage you'll be able to use 4G straight away. Find out more at o2.co.uk/4G”

As this stage, your account will be enabled with 4G access. To use 4G, all you need is a 4G compatible device with the latest software, a 4G compatible SIM card and 4G coverage in your area - and then you’re good to go.
