If you're being blackmailed like Les and Pam there's an obvious solution. Tell everyone you're going to a tarts and vicar party. Then turn up at your local pub with everyone there. Female vicar and male tart in drag. Simples

Or better yet explain it was a photo from a fancy dress party or something? No one is going to believe Babe without something more concrete, so I don't see why they don't just go to the police - surely the police would use discretion and I'm fairly certain Babe ain't no tech wiz to the extent she can hide the fact it's her who sent the emails.

I just can't understand what all the fuss is about. So he likes to dress in women's clothes: so what. Surely, in such a cosmopolitan mix of all different sorts of people it wouldn't be something worth black mailing someone about. Call their bluff and get on with your life. Nothing is worth all that stress. I thought that it had all come out into the open anyway, ages ago. Can't see the problem at all. It's nothing to be ashamed of so tell the black mailer to p*ss off!

As nice as I think Pam is about everyone, I think a generational thing here comes into play a little - she's struggling to understand why, when Les is happy being male. Plus she's terribly embarrassed people will judge her. Gossips don't like being gossip.

I don't understand why they can't just do this. The locals are far more likely to believe Les and Pam over Babe, and it's not as if dressing up as a woman (especially if they say it was just for a fancy dress competition/Halloween/party etc.) is such a big deal anyway.

It's true. Les and Pam could easily spin Les being a crossdress into something less embarassing (not that i think it is or should be embarassing but people gossip and are nasty)

Except I think Pam knows Les won't lie. He hinted as much in the episode that he might be okay if it all came out. Pam however....

Well, I'm in my seventies and nothing bothers me, whatsoever. My neighbour, a tall masculine looking guy, is often seen walking his dog through the village whilst wearing women's clothes. No one took a blind bit of notice after the initial surprise. Live and let live, is what I say.

I agree. I suspect Pam would too. It's just the fact it's her husband and the fact she literally had no idea the entire time she's known him. It's probably more about her than him.

Go to police. Police track bank account to Babe. Police track email address to Babe. Babe is arrested and hopefully disappears for ever. Simples.
It's not as the blackmail threatens physical hurt to anybody.

Well yes, in my experience there are quite strict policies for providing proof of identification when opening a bank account. Online transactions (you would think) could be easily traced, but then soap world rarely reflects real world.

I thought exactly this. It's one picture of Les in Drag. It might provide the simpletons of Walford with a good laugh for a few days but they could pass it off in many ways . It would be forgotten quickly. I don't understand their panic and willingness to hand over £250 a week to supress this.

I also don't get why Pam, who in other ways shows herself to be open-minded and compassionate comes across like an intimidated bigot in relation to Les's cross-dressing. Finally, (and this is a gripe with a lot of other EE character) They've so far handed over £1,000 and this in itself sends them into financial meltdown.! They both own business's, and as Les's is the Coker family business for generations let's assume he's never been out of work, and he is in his 60's. Have these people not saved at all??. I know £1k is not a small amount of money but they are acting like they will have the bailiffs round and visiting food banks next week!

I hope they find out who is doing it and Les embalms Babe alive and then has her cremated.

The other aspect to this story which doesn't really add up is Pam's previous career as a Social Worker. Now I work in Social Services, so understand that not every Social Worker follows the professional values that they are supposed to commit to, however Pam has been portrayed as being one who did. What I can't fathom is why, after the initial shock of Les's cross dressing, and the hurt of being lied to, that Pam hasn't begun to recognise that it's part of who he is and to deny that part of him is potentially harmful - to their relationship AND to his mental health. No Social Worker worth their salt would force someone to comply with a blackmailer over a 'secret' like this because the reality is that Les's cross dressing doesn't do anyone any harm. Yes it might be embarrassing for Pam for a short while, and yes, they might lose business from a few small-minded individuals who think what he does is "offensive", but compared to the shame and damage that covering it up AND paying out to a blackmailer to keep it a secret will certainly do - a bit of embarrassment and finding out who are their real friends and getting on with their lives is a drop in the ocean.

EDIT: Actually, in hindsight, what on earth am I thinking? This is soapland, where all Social Workers have no moral compass or abide by a set of professional ethics and statutory responsibilities, and are merely there to facilitate storylines that win audience sympathy with characters by cruelly stealing their children away.
